I'm running Windows XP Home. I share my PC with my wife and daughter and we all have restricted login accounts, along with one administrator account used for those things that need such privileges. My daughter and the admin account have passwords, the other accounts don't. We regularly switch between accounts. Periodically (once every day or two) the PC prompts for a password on all accounts, and the correct passwords do not work on the passworded accounts. The only way to get back is to re-boot the system and all is back as it should be. I can't see any pattern as to when this happens. It's incredibly annoying, and I have no idea where to look for a solutoin. Any ideas gratefully received.
Thanks,
Nearvana

Check in Windows Explorer and see if you have more than one Windows / WinNT folder...

Thanks for the responses - I guess this has been happening for a month now - it may have co-incided with installing some Pinnacle media software (which I've just (2 mins ago) uninstalled, so maybe some hope there), but nothing obviously password related.
My PC is up to date on Windows, and I have regularly updated firewall and AV software. I'll try checking the adware, but it's never found anything (real) yet.
There's only the 1 Windows directory on C. Not sure if it might be a clue, but I have my Documents and Settings on D: - though that was the case for a lng time before this started happening.

Hi.. nearvana I know what is going on.. When you share a folder and you wife tries to access it over the network it asks for a login right? ok then.. it asks for the passwords that is for the Administrator. Not you.. the admiistrator but the computer who ever set the windows it asks for a password for the administrator.. but if you and your wife create a password on the account then you enter it in the fileds but if you dont then enter the adminstrator password.. right back.. im a mess at writing dont worry though as slong as i got my point across
P.S. if anything goes wrong write again and i will explain more clearly
-
Well I would like you to explain more clearly, anyway. ::)

Ditto...

I don't think so, Maksim - there is no network access or file sharing going on, this is pure XP login screen. I've tried entering any valid password for any user - still no joy.

Try just hitting Enter when prompted for a password...
-
Or try just hitting maksim. :o
