Title: Ground Hog Day
Post by: Sidewinder on November 19, 2006, 03:55:48 PM
I have been reliving the same Microsoft update for the past 4 days. After receiving and installing the Windows updates from Microsoft, I keep getting notified to download and install the same update over and over. I have now installed KB923980 seven times and still the machine keeps notifying me to download and install this critical update.

The Windows Update history shows that this was installed successfully all seven times. It even shows up in the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel.

I finally removed the hotfix and started from scratch. Nothing has changed, the notifications keep coming. This update does not require a reboot, so as soon as I install it, the notification icon pops up and tells me to download and install it again.

Any thoughts what to do? I checked the install file and I'm not really sure this was applied properly but then again maybe it was :-?

This is on a WinXP SP2 machine. Fully updated except for patch KB923980

I'm guessing! It might require admin priviledges to properly install. Try going off line, and see if it will manually install from the admin account. Verify the files validity before you do this.

Thanks 2K but that didn't help. Neither did going to safe mode. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get windows patches in safe mode with networking? Not fun.

I also worked around the Automatic Updates procedure and hunted down the patch on the Microsoft site as a singular file download. Still not working. At this point I'm just going to ignore the notification until the next Patch Tuesday. Every time I install this sucker, a new system restore point is taken which means right now I can only go back about 17 hours!

Thanks Fed. That was the link I used to download the patch trying to avoid the Automatic Updates procedure. Still ended up with the same results. The install log showed I didn't have the right file versions for patching. After researching the patch I decided I really don't need it since it concerned the Netware Client which I don't use.

To get rid of the notification icon, I clicked the "Don't show me this update" box on the Windows Update site.
