Title: power supply
Post by: aeromom on November 22, 2006, 05:56:00 AM
Hi,

I installed a new power supply, everything works great.  What happens?  Click on shut down, everything shuts down, but the power supply stays on.  Anyone have any suggestions as to what I did wrong, or missed?
Thanks
 :)

Well I would say it does NOT work great then. WHat are the details? WHat make and wattage power supply? Computer info? Are you positive eveything is connected correctly?

Do you mean that the fan keeps running?

what I meant by working great, he can get to his sites, mail, etc.  It's an emachines, W2646.  I went to the site, ordered the exact power supply they said for the system.  eMachines enhanced 250 watt power supply.  Yes, it's connected correctly  :)

Yes.  I think it's the fan?  Shut down windows, does that, monitor goes off, something, fan?, is still running.

thanks
 :)

Does the PSU have a smart fan? Does it shut down after a period of time (10 to 30 min.)? Some newer PSU's don't immediately stop the fan. They continue to run until the PSU cools to a preset temp.

that's a good question 2k, thanks :), but I don't know.  Just went and looked on the site, doesn't say anything about this PSU, except what I already said.  I just went in and shut it down, I'll wait and see what happens.  Sure would be nice if that's all it is!

waited an hour, and the fan was still running.  Dang.  Now I have to wait, it's my husbands pc, he works midnights, and has gone to sleep.
Thanks, it was a good thought.

Does this power supply have a switch on the back of it?

Turn the power off at the wall socket.

Yes!  It does have a switch on the back of it.  Of course, if I hit that switch the PS turns off.  Gees, does that mean the only way to turn it off, is to hit that switch?  That's a pain, and there was nothing saying that in the paper work.

What is the make and wattage of that power supply?

I don't know the make, no paperwork came with it.  eMachines enhanced 250 watt, is all it said.  This from the eMachines site.  In fact I just went back, again, LOL, to see if I keep missing anything.  Nope.  But, I did just notice the picture they have, does not show a switch on the back.

It's probably just a low-end Chinese knock off. That may be how it is "designed". I hope you didn't pay a lot.  ;)

Stock eMachines generally use Bestec units. They are in a similar category.

ah gees.  It is a stock eMachines.  No, I didn't pay a lot, but if there's no way to work around this, except to buy another PS, then that's money out the window.  Who wants to leave it running all the time, not me.
I'm guessing, that's what you think I should do?  It's an eMachines W2646.
LOL, at myself.  Since I wasn't sure I could even install this, I just bought the same PS.  They did show 2 others, upgrades, but didn't do that.  Maybe I should have?
So, if you don't mind helping me here, what do you suggest?  Deal with leaving it on, try buying a new one, that doesn't have a switch, or just buy a whole new computer.
Thanks for your help, btw.  Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving  :)

Return the EMachines unit and get your money back...
Buy a decent PSU around 400 or 450W and install it yourself.
It's fairly easy just take all electrical and ESD precautions when doing so...

looks like that's what I'll have to do.  Gees.  Any suggestions where to buy one, on line?

LOL :) I know that place.  But, I would want one that is the right one for this model pc.  So far, on ebay, not much in descriptions.  Oh, and I see switchs on the back!  Switches scare me now  :)

And don't be scared of switches...

I've been to his site  :)  Even checked out his installing the psu, the last step, turn the power switch on.  Which I did, but it doesn't shut down when I shut down windows.

This is absolutely the MOST important part of that link Patio gave you:

Avoid Power Supplies Under $30
Most power supplies that are priced below $30 generally do not meet the power requirements of the latest processors. To make matters worse, the components used in them are of inferior quality and more likely to fail over time. While they may power the computer system, inconsistencies in the power to the components will tend to cause instability and damage to the computer.

I saw that right away.  What struck me?  The one I bought isn't under 30, and everything I see on ebay is.

Don't go to EBay...try newegg instead.

and think Antec.  ;)

No 250w power supply is worth $30. No doubt that's what they sold it for, though.  ::)

I was going to ask what type.  Ebay has Dynex, Echo, Antec, and again most are below $30.
Thanks

"Power supply buyers and shoppers are generally naïve, trusting manufacturer claims blindly. "

Yep, that would be me, found that on 2nd good read you sent me, thanks.

I'm still lost as to what to buy.  This computer is not used for anything expect trolling the internet, ex, ticketmaster, for concerts, lol, stuff like that.  And email.  Nothing more.

I just don't care for the fact that the only way to turn this baby off is to flip a switch on the back.
That's why I said switches scare me  :), don't want to by another one to replace this new one, and have the same problem.

thanks everyone for helping me, I really appreciate it.

I'm sure it wouls be a lot easier to just get into the habit of switching it off at the wall, unplugging it as well. That way, with it unplugged, it is even protected against power surges that can blow up hard drives.

It's what I used to do with min before I got surge protected. I still switch it off at the socket though.

That's what he'll have to do, flip the switch.  I'd rather buy him another PSU, so he didn't have to do that, and return this one.  But that's me, it's the principal of the thing.  Yeah, that gets me far, LOL.
He's satisfied with shutting down, then flipping the switch.
