Title: Favourite retro consoles?
Post by: Calum on December 06, 2006, 11:40:44 AM
So, what're your favourite retro consoles?
Favourite retro games?
Retro consoles you owned/own?
I had a Sega Megadrive, but I sold it.
I have a Sega Gamegear at the minute, I absolutely love it, some of the games are awesome.
Sonic Chaos, Sonic & Tails, Sonic Triple Trouble, Sonic Drift, Sonic, Sonic 2, Alien 3 ... I'm a big Sonic fan.
I alos have an old Atari system (computer rather than console), but it's missing a monitor  :(
Oh yes, finally I did have a Gameboy COlor, but I sold that too because I didn't have any decent games for it.
Anyway, happy voting!

PS if I've missed any consoles you think should be on there or there's anything I need to clarify, please let me know.
Thanks.

NES has to be one of the best ones out there (voted other). Snes isnt bad on that note. I think Mario > Sonic and always will.. mario 64 beats any of those modern sonic games that go so fast you cant keep up but at the same time are so challenging that my 3 year old nephew has completed most of it : /
Also alot of the games on the NES were actually challenging.. i found with megadrive and ps1 etc. all the games you could complete with relative ease within a day.

OMG how did I forget about NES and SNES?
I'll add them right now!
They really were good, and they're pretty valuable nowadays.

OK, few things.
I know about the list, it's available on Wikipedia.
I just put the most memorable ones/ones I could recall offhand/ones people may have had.
Many of those consoles, for good or ill, have faded inti the backdrop of history.
And the poicture, I've seen it before -  nice one.
Don't you just wish that was your living room?
And yes, Sonic Chaos was awesome . . . but the running on the spot was ever so slightly pointless . . .

I would have to say the Nintendo 64.  Mainly because of the Zelda games for it, Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask Classics in my opinion

showing my age here!  I remember my parents getting me a silver/black console and all it had was pong (tennis) on one side and a shooting game on the other. It was kinda large and came with a six-shooter type gun-connected by a cord mind you. It might have been the original pong, not sure...But to kids in the early/mid 70's it was  basically the 1st  video game to come out. I think Led Zeppelin was playing on the record player. That was a thing that went in circles- with a large type orb  spinning around !!   :D

Are you aware the last post in this thread was made in February. Let sleeping dogs lie.

I remember pong, my parents had it. I had an Atari 2600 with Yars Revenge, Star Raiders, Adventure and the classic Space Invaders. My mates had a Intellivision then a Coleco-vision, which was what i first saw Donkey Kong on and someone else had a Vectrex.
Then i had a Sega Megadrive, i remember Alien 3, Speedball 2, Ecco and Virtual Racing being cool games.
I've had 3 playstation ones at various times but sold them all when i got hooked on the nintendo 64 with Goldeneye, Zelda and Perfect Dark, fantastic games.
I stuck with Nintendo and got a GameCube, which im still playing and have got a Wii.
I sometimes play Age of Empire type games on the PC and sometimes Sherlock Holmes games (god help me, why!!! ???)
Has Track got any of the above mentioned, i doubt it. The Vectrex was only out for, like, a week!
Also, strip monopoly, but that just me

I voted SNES.

Super Ghouls & Ghosts has got to be the best game ever invented. Plus, it has the greatest level music (first level) known to man. Love that game.

Anyone remember a console called GX-4000? I only had 2 games for it, *censored* Tracey & Burnin' Rubber. Both good time wasters, but decent enough games.

I voted Nintendo 64.
After playing the greystation one the N64 was a god send.
Resident Evil 2 etc, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Shadowman. This was the machine that turned me from a part-time gamer to a serious hardcore gamer.

LONG LIVE NINTENDO.

My favorite would have to be N64. I've played others like NES or SNES, but N64 always was what held my attention the most.  My favorite games for it would have to be of course Goldeneye, TWINE, SOTE, Rush 2049, and Mario Kart 64.  I still play these games and others today.  Ebay is a great place to find old games and accessories for systems long gone from store shelves.

Excuse my ignorance, I know TWINE is The World is not Enough, but what is SOTE

SOTE.... I think guess that's Shadow of the Empire. Probably not, but that's the only SOTE I can think of.

Yes, as far as I know, SOTE is Shadow of the Empire.

Yes, as far as I know, SOTE is Shadow of the Empire.

That would be correct.

It's funny to me that N64 is listed as a retro console.

Why not? It's been around now for more than a decade.  Nintendo already moved two consoles away from the N64 with GameCube and the Wii.  Besides, for many of us here I would think that the N64 was probably our first gaming console that we played along with the original Playstation. It was for me.  Sure I have played SNES, Sega Genesis, and others alike, but that's because I have older cousins that let me play them when I visited.  We still play Duck Hunt from time to time along with many rounds of Goldeneye that my cousin owns us at.

:P i still own all mine...

genesis (called the mega drive in oz)
playstation 1, 2, 3
Xbox
atari (original console)
saturn
gamecube
gameboy pocket, micro, colour, advance
DS
PSP
game gear (rare, doesn't work anymore)
PC (duh)
commodore 64
bunch of emulators...

all of these are either in my cupboard (sorta like the abyss that long dead topics fall into) or are lost (like my micro, which fell down a drain), or are broken, or are used regularly..

i still need an xbox 360 :P

It's just that "retro" is often synomymous with "vintage".  And it would definitely be a stretch to say that N64 is vintage.  I'm sure it's up for debate, but I think that currently, "retro" refers to anything from the 80's and earlier.

I grew up playing Atari 2600 and NES, so it's just hard for me to think of N64 as being a retro console.

I would have to agree that the N64 certainly isn't vintage.  The system has only been around about a decade or so.  It's not exactly hard to find anything N64 related on eBay.  I've purchased many games and other N64 items on there for very little money.  Though I would have to say that it does seem to have a old-school appeal to it now.  For many of us younger members who grew up playing the N64, it has that classic feel to it already now that we've moved on to other systems including the PC.

Well, N64 was quite good for it's time.

And think that it can be considered retro, because it now has two other preceding game consoles (GC and Wii).

I think Pokémon Gold and Silver were the best. I think it had a better storyline.
I have the game on the computer. I got these roms from the internet and a gameboy player. Really cool thing.
Don't know if this would count as advertising but do a search for 'Gameboy Roms' in google.

Wasn't Gold and Silver the one where there was the Red Gyrados and that you discovered that Giovanni had a son? Give me a quick refresh - 25 words or less

And Emulator, as well as Roms, should give some good results. I like using them because you can just cheat to get up to the part of the game you want (I've already bet the game, don't worry).

I think Ruby and Sapphire has good storylines too and good graphics.

meh... i don't really like the storyline in a any of them... i just like the utter customisation and character development.
if i want to play something with character customisation and storyline.. i can always choose out of my 2 favourite games :P final fantasy 7, or final fantasy tactics.. the fact that those are my favourite games also further confuses me as to why i'm so intrigued with making this FPS i'm making... i'm a very confused person...

Hey, why ditch a good thing?  And yes, it was like Tetris.  Well, Tetris Attack, to be exact.  The puzzle mode definitely set it apart, however, and is what made the game fun for me.

sonic the hedgehog maaan.. he got better and better until it was too commercialised, now the games aren't as good as the good ol' side scroller of doom, where you have the occasional instances of 3d spheres in odd formations and strange emerald that fall out of the sky and happen to land in your hand, giving you points which, i assume, go to a casino run by native americans.

Oh, I just remembered! Gold and Silver had 16 bagdes!!! You did Johto, then you could go to Kanto!

And Diamond and Pearl (only played Pearl, though) have the best graphics of any opf the series, as well as an awesome storyline. But Game Freak should bring back Team Rocket! We need to learn more about Mewtwo and Giovanni's son!

(N.B. I've been offline for 3 days playing Pearl, if anyone was wondering where I had gone)
