Hi, I'm on a friends computer who is in the hospital and asked me if I could update it for her as she knows nothing about even the most basic spyware protection, ect...
She is on Windows XP Pro Version 2002
3D Micro Computer IPC
Intel Pentium III
128 MG RAM
Having done all that I noticed that her computer has no sound, she swears up and down she did before, when looking at what she has here I'm not really sure, I'm going to post some screen shots, and that will hopefully help you guys help me figure out the problem here....
In the volume area it says no audio device....
-
In the audio section nothing is listed and cant make any selections....
-
In the hardware section it says all are functioning properly....
-
As for normal system computer sounds, the test button on the left of the browse button is blocked out, none are functioning....
-
I hope someone can help me out with this, if I cant fix it I have a feeling she will say I changed something somehow, even though adding spyware programs and downloading Windows updates wouldnt change a thing like that....
-
DLoad and run Everest Home on that machine...this will tell you exactly what sound device that system has.
Then using that info travel to the manuf site, DLoad the correct drivers and re-install them
See if this helps.
-
So would it be the C-media thing I would now look for?
-
Or something in here?
-
Is this what I'm looking for and is it safe to download it?

As you can tell I havent downloaded and installed drivers before....
-
So what report did Everest give you? This was suggested by patio.
FreeEverestDownload (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html)
-
Reason we ask fullbug is Everest is a little more thorough than what the OS reports in some cases.
The wrong drivers are just as bad as no drivers.
-
The 2 above pics (Besides the links pic) is the info Everest gave me, unless I'm not running the program right, will check in a few minutes....
-
My full apologies here... :-[ :-[
It looked from the downsized screenshot like Windows Device Manager.
The CMedia listed is the onboard sound controller. Not what we need.
Under multimedia click on the PCI/plug and pray device and report what it says.
-
OK, I ran the report, wow, what a cool program, gotta keep that one...
The report it huge, so far cant find anything that says sound device, just the sound, video and game controllers, will look through it again....
One sec Patio, just noticed your above post...
-

You were correct fullbug.
I emailed you a copy of the driver in case I confused you.
Bad on me. :D
-
Man if this doesn't work we're gonna look awful silly huh ? ?
::)
-
I have foot in mouth disease patio so.........
I don't get too-------------> :-[
-
Its starting the installation process, and waiting for the audio driver to be ready, its been doing that for 15 minutes, if it doesnt finish soon maybe I should try it again....Thanx for the help so far guys....
-
I cant get that program to install, the installation wouldnt get past the audio driver loading, and closed with an error after 20 minutes, same thing the second time, it loads but wont get to the second stage of installing....
-
You should always uninstall all instances of your
sound before installing a new driver.Did you do
that?

So would I have to uninstall everything shown in the pic in reply #2 as well?
And if all this doesnt work would a system restore replace what I would remove afterword?
-
GX1, could use your advice here.... :-?
-
I hate to push, but I only have this computer for a few hours, can someone tell me if its safe to uninstall these things?

I'm on the computer now, can you at least tell me how to uninstall these things?
-
If you are using an add on sound card, you need to disable onboard audio in the BIOS. Is this the case?
-
I dont know GX, how can I find that out?
This isnt my computer, just dealing with whats in front of me....And what does BIOS mean?
I used to think I was "fairly' at computer know how, but this stuff is new to me, installing sound card and such.....
One big question I need to know though, before I touched this computer, was there a sound card in it? Or was it already fried? I need to know this.....
-
Maybe at this point I should just throw up my hands and say to her screw it, your computer doesnt have sound anymore, pay some ripoff guy a 100 or so and fix it yourself, I tried....
I have been at this for 2 days now and I cant seem to find anyone here who will tell me whats really going on....
-
Read the below site to get to your BIOS to see if onboard sound
is enabled.
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm
-
Thanx Street, will check that out in a few hours once morning hits....
-
To see if there is a sound card installed open the case...
-
To see if there is a sound card installed open the case...
*censored*, do I really have to do that? That is a major undertaking, is there any other way of finding out?
-
On most cases that is removing three screws at most. ::)
You can also look on the back of the case and see if there are sound ports in an expansion card slot as well as some from the motherboard itself (and therefore not in a slot).
-
Does the fact that her sound used to work mean something?
I need to know this.....
-
Yes.
-
Yes.
YES.
