Dear Friends,
Now using Windows XP Home, want to reinstall XP Professional. Can we without causing big problem-losing files etc?
The reason is that cant do a new installation cos no drivers for the pc so cant reformat.( cant get the drivers cos I dont hv the model name ).

Download EVEREST Free Edition 2.20 (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html) and run it to get a report of everything in your system. Then, you'll have the information you need to go out and find drivers.

yes, i hv done already . actually everesthome cant tell us the main board model name which is required to find out Soltex mainboard drivers.
Just want to know whether XP Home can be reinstalled (replaced) with XP Pro?

Is your Win XP Pro CD a full version or upgrade version? If an upgrade version, then, yes, you could do it. See http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/matrix.mspx
If it's a full version, I believe not, as implied in the aforementioned link, but I'm not absolutely sure about this.

Yes, it is a full-licenced version (XP Pro)

JL....... I assume the machine is fully functional now with XP home ....... you should be able to go into the device manager and see exactly which drivers are being used.
Specifically which drivers are you concerned about ?
Why do you wish to replace XP home with XP pro? ( just curious)
What were you planning on doing , installing XP pro on top of XP home ? Thats not a good idea....... unless you were planning on having it on a differant partition.

Drivers for the mainboard, Sir.
I would like to change XP Home to XP Pro. to use this pc as a server, not only that like to run XP Pro. that I already bought, if not , not in use.
By the way, u have any idea how can I know my mainboard model name?
Dont tell me system spy software, please. they cant tell the model name which I require to find out the drivers. If I can know the model name, everything will have sorted out.

Hmmm ..., "system spy software"? Are you referring to Everest Home that I mentioned in a previous post? Don't worry, it's not spyware. LOL. And, it definitely DOES reveal the motherboard model.

It doesn't always know what kind of motherboard is being used. I spent a week trying to figure out what kind of motherboard I had. Everest and two other similar programs listed my mother board as Unknown. It wasn't until I snooped around the Gateway site for an hour when I finally discovered what it was. JL may need to visit his PC manufacturer's site if he's having trouble determining the model.

OK, Chris, thanks for pointing that out. Hmmm, I wonder if JL might possibly tell us more about his computer, such as brand and model. ;)
