Title: Strange new issue with my pc
Post by: ansonibasukezu on March 21, 2007, 01:15:17 AM
Hello everyone! The other day I was surfing the web for info on a videogame and clicked on a link to one of the results (second one down, on google... not that it matters). Anyway. it became quickly apparent that it was a baaad webpage because i got three totally messed up popups.

One of them said my computer was corrupted and to quickly install something... looked like an obvious plot to destroy my pc so I closed that. Then my "My Computer" window popped up suddenly and I saw some download bars on my C and D drives, as if something was being installed into them, only it looked strange, as if it wasnt even my actual "My Computer" window but rather a popup trying to fool me. It happened so quickly that I don't remember many details, as I exited out of it. After that i ran ad aware, spybot, ewido, and ccleaner. They found a trojan and a newdotnet thing and i quarantined those. havent been able to remove the newdotnet yet.

After that I didn't notice any problems until the next morning when i started up my pc, and now I have these completely weird lines all over my pc. I can't play videogames or watch any movies because they are totally jacked up, and a barcode like string of vertical bars follows my mouse everywhere. Here is a print screen i took(notice how many icons are warped because of the bars).

Does anyone know what this is? I haven't a clue... not even sure what to do, or what to even call it. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Note ....without seeing your hijackthis log, it's hard to be certain what else you may be infected with .

thank you dl65, i followed your instructions however I still have the problem. Perhaps my problem is slightly different or, more likely, I did something wrong. Well, I just did a hijack and these are the results

I haven't tried to analyze your HijackThis log but I noticed all the Logitech Desktop Messenger (http://www.pcreview.co.uk/startup/backweb-8876480.exe/Logitech%20Desktop%20Messenger.php) lines in it.  If I were you, I think I'd want to get rid of them.  Could you uninstall Logitech Desktop Messenger?

earthfell ... I suggest you print this out to help you follow my advice.

***********************

Make sure you have exposed all Hidden Files & Folders.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

   1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
   2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
   3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
   4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
   5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
   6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
   7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
   8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
   9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and close My Computer.

***********************

Follow soybean's advice. Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall LDM. It will clog up your machine and is not a good program to use IMO.

Your HJT folder is in a temporary location here ...

C:\DOCUME~1\Admin\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX01.625\HijackThis.exe

NOTE >> the "~1" symbols denote the DOS file name. Only the first 6 characters are displayed. The full name should be the C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Admin\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp folder.

Move the HJT folder to the C: drive so any backups made by the program are not lost.

***********************

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:***********************

Download Ewido/AVG Anti Spyware from here ….

http://www.ewido.net/en/

It has a fully working 30 day trial period.

Install it and update it to the latest definitions.

Do NOT use it yet.

Now boot to safe mode. Here’s a “how to” if you’re not sure ..

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

When in safe mode run a full system scan with AVGAS and let it fix what it wants to.

REMEMBER TO SAVE THE SCAN REPORT and also remember where you saved it.

***********************

Still in safe mode .... run another scan with HJT and put tick/check marks next to all the 018 entries relating to LDM.

Remember to close ALL open browser windows – including this one – before clicking on “Fix Checked”  at the foot of the HijackThis window.

***********************

Reboot to normal mode and use the computer as you would usually do.

Note that, on boot up, you may get "error" messages that LDM is trying to launch but can't do so. No problem. All that is happening is you have uninstalled LDM but the run instructions are still trying to carry out their remit and load LDM. Just bypass such LDM error messages; we will stop those later.

[FOOTNOTE > AVG Anti Spyware is a good program to use as an “on demand” scanner even after the trial period is over. Keep it updated and use it to scan your computer from time to time].

***********************

When done post a fresh HJT log, the AVG AS scan report and an update on how your computer is working now.
