I'm trying to install a network card; I've used every port trying to get the drivers right, and now that the drivers are right I don't have a port that recognizes the new hardware...any suggestions?
-
Does the card support Win98 ? ?
You didn't mention which card it is...
-
The card is a startech 10/100Mbps ethernet pci card recommended by HP for my computer...566mhz 512MB Ram (yeah, I know...it's old!)
-
Uninstall the drivers and power down and physically remove the card...
Do a few cold boots.
Power down and re-install the card.
Re-boot and when Windows detects it point it to the correct driver location.
As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions.
-
Yeah, I tried it, still not seeing the card.... :'(
-
The card itself could be bad...try it in a different machine if you can...if not i would just get a new card they are not that much.
Just be sure it supports Win98.

Fwiw:
I am using Win98SE right now.
About six months ago, I bought a network interface card. First time I'd ever had need of one, so I know very little about them.
Got an Encore ENL832-TX-ICNT . I'm not here to praise it or anything like that. All I can say is that it works. I can use it with DSL modem/router, web browse, upload and download files, etc.
I bought it because it was cheap, and on hand when I walked into the store. I knew it would fit in a PCI computer in my old computer. The box said there were Win98 drivers. The included drivers were the same date as the drivers available on their site.
I followed the instructions, and it worked.
Had a look a minute ago, and I guess they quit making it, and now have another model.

The driver file is still available under archives.

If you want a cheap card known to work under Win98SE - there ya go. :)

Willy, Thanks for the suggestion, looks like a decent card at a great price. I notice that it's the same chipset as the card I have now (Realtek839). I'm not sure weather I should try to find a card with a different chipset....maybe that's the problem...on the other hand, this is the chipset Hewlett Pucker recommended for my specific computer, and I know at the time it was built, they were using lots of proprietary hardware!

Are you sure about that?
There were/are a couple model numbers of their cards, and if I remember correctly, one of them said Realtek and another did not.
I'd have to go look at those sites and pages again myself and compare to my model number, to try to figure out just what I've got. :)

Hopefully someone else here that is in-the-know will comment.
I can't.

To tell you the truth, I'd have bought just about any cheap card that day, that physically would fit in my old computer, and claimed to have Win98 drivers.
Cheap means less than 10 dollars.
Staples had cards too that day, but they were up around 15 bucks. They were more recognizable brand names. Netgear, Linksys, and such.
Do you have a computer shop near you? See what they have and recommend.
Remember - if you buy it online for 5 bucks and have to pay 5 bucks shipping, that's 10 bucks you could spend in your local store.... and not have to wait for the package to arrive. :)
Not to make light of money - but that might be your best bet. Spend 5 to 15 dollars on a new card. See what happens.
If you decide to do that, you might want to ask here if there are any brand names, etc. to avoid. Can't hurt to ask.
We might even find out that mine is junk! :D

I doubt there would be a chipset conflict...take Willy's advice.

I think a better known brand than Startech, etc. would be the best start.
-
I have a couple computer stores close by; I'll see what I can find and let you all know what happens - Thanks for the confab, and Rock On!
-
Got a Win 98SE box here with this: LINKSYS LNE100TX 10/100Mbps PCI EtherFast LAN Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124107) No problems.

Agreed. And we're only talkin about the difference between 10 bucks vs. 20 bucks...

The network card is installed, and recognized..... yeah! My wife's son was able to install the startech card on Easter Sunday, with only a few clicks....The only problem is that both internet explorer and Firefox are somehow corrupted, and my antivirus can't connect to the internet...Something serious is wrong somewhere, and we know the connection is good, because we tested it on my working computer! If you guys want to let this drop, or if I should switch forums let me know...Thanks for all the help! P.S. I'm thinking that a reinstall of the OS might be my next move...yes or no...
-
".... we know the connection is good, because we tested it on my working computer!"
Please explain that.
-
We plugged the RJ45 cable out of the router into the working computer before we plugged it into the computer running 98
-
Well, that prooves nothing on the Win 98 machine.
-
all I ment was that we had a good connection coming out of the router.. :-[
-
But, what's subject of this discussion? The network card in that Win 98 computer. Since you have no Internet connection with it when connected to a line you know has a Internet signal, that sure doesn't support your claim that wife's son was able [successfully] to install the startech card on Easter Sunday.
-
I was going by what device mgr. said - that the card was recognized and the drivers were installed correctly....
-
Let me guess... you still think that the card is junk! :-\
-
Has ANYONE ever heard of Startech? Especially as opposed to D-Link, Netgear, 3Com, Linksys, etc.?
We established that you needed a different card days ago. What price is your time worth?
