Title: Norton problems
Post by: daniel123 on May 03, 2007, 09:50:08 PM
Hello again,

I am using Windows XP home, IE 6, and Norton AntiVirus/Internet Security

My first problem:
I cannot connect to Internet Explorer. It always asks for a user + password that I have never needed before, and tries to connect to msn. I usually use Mozilla, which works fine, but I have to use IE to access some parts of the symantec website. This leads to my second problem.

Second Problem:

I was dumb enough to try to download a torrent I should not have, and I had a few computer issues. The first problem I noticed was that my network connections didn't work, saying there was a limited/no connection. This was solved by just turning the modem off then on again. The second problem is that my Norton Virus Protection is turned off/not there, when it has been fine in the past. There is an X beside virus protection, and I also cannot turn on AutoProtect.  All other aspects (spyware protection, etc.) are fine.

When I click "Fix Now" some updates are installed, but it does nothing to solve the problem. I cannot download the Norton tool (which would supposedly find the problem) because I cannot connect to IE.

Your help is appreciated greatly.

You'd probably be better off with AVG Free (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2).  Scan with it (and the other suggested programs) in Safe Mode and report back.

After I've done the scans in safe mode, am I okay to reboot and start up regularly again?

Yes, after your scans, just restart and it'll take you back to Normal Mode.  But before doing so, you should save any scan logs that you're able to.  Not all programs have this feature, but do it when you can and post them here.  And let us know about any problems or improvements.

I ran a scan with superantispyware and it found 2 worm.alcra variants. The virus protection for Norton is working now, but I still have an issue with the autoprotect.

I'll do the safe mode scans with the other programs tomorrow or sunday.

It seems like things are improving, and these programs are probably a good idea anyway. Thanks to everyone for the help so far.

Problems you mean?

Yeah, but that's just a fluctuating thing. Sometimes you hear naught about Norton and other times it's acting up again. I guess it's because so many people use it

That's exactly it.  It's not some sort of strange phenomenon or anything.  Norton is just really popular and really crappy.

Seeing how it comes pre-installed in 90% of machines sold in big retailers it's understandable how many people are running it...

Norton is pre-installed on so many new systems.  However, I am encouraged that Del is now selling new system pre-loaded with Linux.  Perhaps we'll soon be getting new setups pre-loaded with nothing but open source software like AVG or Avast for anti-virus, and Open Office in place of MS Office.  Then we'll be getting somewhere.

I did superanti, adaware, search and destroy, and AVG anti virus scans in safe mode.
Search and Destroy found some WindowsDisable stuff. I removed that, but there is still an error coming up for autoprotect for norton. I've done the scan a couple of times, and the same thing keeps coming up.

The Norton  AutoProtect error comes up after 3-5 minutes of the computer being on. Before then, it's fine. I'm not so worried about Norton specifically, but rather that it means there is definitely something wrong.

Take a look at this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/archive/index.php/t-6993.html).  It sounds like Norton may be overriding your Windows Security Center settings.
