What is the make and model of the computer you just bought?

Seems to me if you wipe the hard drive clean, you can pretty much put whatever operating system you want on it.

Of course, you may have to find XP compatible drivers for the hardware installed on your computer.

Before I did anything I'd do a little research on the manufacturer's webiste to see if you'll have any issues finding XP drivers for your machine.

No you can't. The only to get XP and Vista on same Hard Disk is to install XP first the Vista.
Its becuase vista needs a thing call a master boot file to boot and can not be configure in a dual boot configuration.

In other words, get rid of EVERYTHING on the hard drive and start fresh.
It should work, I cant imagine why it wouldn't.
