I have about 12 computers at work, 11 of them run windows XP. I have one that runs windows 98. I can plug an ethernet cord into my laptop (which runs XP) and get an instant internet connection. Yet when I plug the same ethernet cord into the computer running windows 98' it does not connect to the internet. How can I get this computer on the internet?

Exactly what happens when you try to connect? Do you get any error messages?

You may need to install a driver for that network card. I have a laptop that I put Windows 98 on and it didn't even see the card until I installed the driver.

About that driver:
Click Start ->Settings->Control Panel->System
That brings up System Properties.
Click on the Device Manager tab.
Find Network Adapters. Double click it to expand it.
What do you see there? List everything, please.
Also, do you see any yellow exclamation points or question marks?
... anywhere in Device Manager?
That will get us started.
[ Shorcut for opening Device Manager: Hold down the Windows Key. Tap Pause/Break. Device Manager will pop right up. ]

There are no yellow exclamation points.

On the desktop there should be a network neighborhood icon. Right click it and select properties. Make sure miscrosoft client for networks and tcp/ip are loaded. If they are not, you will need a W98 disk.

VIA VT6102 Rhine 11 Fast Ethernet Adapter -- that looks to be your network card. So its driver is installed. That's good. I see your other post, that there are no yellow warnings.... that's good.
I hope someone else jumps in here... I really don't know if it is a worthwhile idea to uninstall and then reinstall your network card driver. I'd probably do it anyway, if it were me.
Double click on VIA VT6102 Rhine 11 Fast Ethernet Adapter.
Have a look around. Anything look like it is turned off?
"Disable in this hardware profile" is not on, is it?

I am using Win98 right now. In this computer, I have what I believe is an inexpensive network card..... but it works fine.
In Network Neighborhood->Properties->Configuration tab I see it listed. So you should too. Click on it, then Properties->Bindings . What does it say?

Can you list for us everything that appears there?
... perhaps a half dozen or so things listed?
Below that list is Primary Network Logon . What appears in the box?

I'm really hoping one of the networking gurus gets in here soon. I'm talking to you mainly because I too am using Win98, and I don't think there are many of us left. :) Maybe I'll stumble across something in my own set up that when compared to yours will help you.
I'm also wondering what would it would prove, if you were to open a command prompt window and issue the command
ping 127.0.0.1
Again - we need a networking person to help us - but I think that is pinging yourself. It works on mine, anyway. :) Try it.... post back the results..... maybe it is useful info for someone else to be able to help you.
Let me know if there is anything you want me to look up in mine, for you to compare to.

Start / run / type ipconfig /all what shows up for the IP address / default gateway / DHCP enabled and DNS servers?

I tried to run Ipconfig, and the window pops up then dissapears right away before I can read what it says. The Rhine 11 fast ethernet connections seems to be fine, I looked around and everything seems to be turned on. I found a list of adapters that I can add to my network connections. Would it help to download one of these? If so which one? Thanks for the help.

Try opening a Dos window first, then run ipconfig /all from the command line. You might find it Start->Programs->MS DOS Prompt .

I found that Rhine ethernet under Contol Panel/Sytem/Network/Configuration. There are also about 15 other network adapters (some ethernet) that I can add. I am just not sure which one would work for me? I cannot find a Dos prompt on Start/Programs I looked around and could not find how to access Dos

Also I have the Windows 98' disk, I just need to know which adapter I should install. Or a list of a few I can try.

Click start/run, type command, press enter. This will bring up a window for the command prompt. You can run ipconfig there. Another (simpler) method in 98 is to click start/run, type winipcfg, press enter. There will be a drop down menu with a list of adapters for which drivers are loaded. Click on your adapter and it will display pertinent information. See what is listed for IP, subnet mask, gateway, and dns server.

Go into network settings and select this adapter (the one you want should be preceded by tcp/ip) and set it to acquire IP address automatically. Then under the gateway tab, set it to the IP address of the router.

how do I find the IP address of the router?

I looked over the Rhine ethernet, I found that the Network ID was blank. Where can I find out what the Network ID is?

If you don't have access to the router, go to one of the other machines and open a command window. Enter the command ipconfig /all. It will likely be listed under gateway. At a guess, i would say it is 192.168.1.1

The gateway address was 192.168.60.2. I typed this in. It used to tell me that there was no internet connection, it does not say that anymore. Now it says page cannot be displayed so maybe were getting somewhere. Do I need to configure the TC/IP Rhine ethernet, which I found by scrolling down past the network adapters?

Go to control panel/internet and under the connection tab tick "connect to the internet using local area network".

When I configure the Rhine II and click ok it tells me to insert the windows 98' CD. The CD does nothing, it does not have the Network adapter on it. I think my best bet is to download another network adapter and go from there. Any suggestions of which one will work for me, and where I can download it at. I appreciate the help.

You cannot download an adapter, only drivers. The adapter in your machine is what you have to work with. If you have downloaded a mess of unnecessay drivers, I suggest you remove them. You may need to start from scratch. One thing you can try now - go into device manager and remove all network adapters. Then go into contral panel and double "add new hardware". See if windows detects your nic and loads drivers for it.

I didn't want to say too much, since I'm not real confident on this topic - but to me, after reading that post, it sounds like he has a LOT of different drivers installed.
Read that post again..... what do you think?... am I correct?
Back then, I was wondering if it would be good advice to tell him to uninstall them all, and then just reinstall the one he needs.
