Title: Unable to drag & drop files to DVD
Post by: kittenhead on June 17, 2007, 01:16:02 AM
I've been trying to copy some files off of my hard drive onto a DVD-R but every time I get a window pop up "Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file.  What would you like to do Retry - Ignore - Cancel"
I know I've been able to do this with with just a plan CD-R and I think this is the first time I've every tried it with a DVD-R.
I put this computer together myself (my first time) so who knows what I could have done.  :-\

My CD/DVD drive is a Lite-On DVDRW SHM-165p6s
My mother bored is a Asus A8N-SLI Premium

Can you copy the files from your hard drive to another location on your HD?
Put the DVD-R into another computer. Does it work on that computer?

I can copy files to other locations on my HD without any problems.  I unfortunately don't have another computer at the moment to test the DVD-R on.  I've tried more then one DVD-R but they have all been from the same pack so I'm not sure if it would make much difference anyways.

Grab a program called CDBurnerXP Pro...it's free. See if this helps...

Also borrow / buy a blank DVD from everyone you know and try them all .

Sounds like your burner doesn't like your current brand.

For me, Imation and Memorex work the best in just about all the burners I've used.

I think you're all missing something here.
You cannot drag and drop files onto a DVD-R as you can with a CD-R on XP.
Most versions of Vista can, however.

As patio said, you will need a program to burn DVDs, such as the excellent and free CDBurnerXP Pro.
Hope this helps.

Woohoo I've got some results!  I dug up some DVD+RW's of a different brand but what I think the real helper here was CDBurnerXP Pro.  I was afraid it was going to do the same thing that Nero was doing (Nero would stop responding at 100% chapter writing or something similar) but this one came through!  I did however, get an error 'Error 91, Object variable or With block variable not set' but it didn't seen to effect my disc so I'm not going to worry about it.  Thank you all so much for the help, now I can delete these 500,000+ files off my HD and move on with my life :)

And thank you street1 for the warm welcome!  Everyone has been more then helpful at this forum and that's getting hard to find lately.  I usually ether get flamed for one thing or another or only get comments on a typo I made at most forums, so I don't usually go back.  But I think I'll be keeping this one in my faves for any of my computer questions, which  reminds me, I have a question on internet security software for the software sections.  Anywho, thanks again!

I'd test retrieving files from that DVD before you go ahead and delete files from your hard drive.  I don't know what the error message means; Google it and you'll get plenty of sites.  But, I would just want to verify I could retrieve or open my files from that DVD before deleting files from the hard drive.  Indeed, you should always test a backup procedure by verifying you can restore files from the backup media before deleting files from your hard drive.

By the way, I was tempted to mention a typo in your first post but was not going to post just for that.  But, since I'm posting a technical point, I'll mention the typo, which made me chuckle.  You referred to your motherboard as "mother bored".

Oh I was sure to test the DVD before deleting the files.  Everything seems to have worked just fine, so who knows what that error might have done.  I'm sure it will come up later, those kind of things always do for me :-\
And as far the the motherboard typo, well, considering it was 3 or 4 in the morning and I had been fighting with my computer all night I'm surprised that that's the only typo I made (now that I said that someone will find more)  :P  I tend to be heavy on the space bar just normally.

Soybean however does make a great point...
The real way to test those files is not to just check them from the DVD...i know because i got burned this way before and never again.
Take 2 or 3 different file types i.e. data, music, video. Select one of each and copy them back to the hard drive in an empty folder.
Then test each one to make sure they are not corrupt. If they are fine then you are good to go...
