The burner shouldn't need drivers in XP.

Is there more than one CD/DVD device in that machine ? ?

What are they labeled as on the front ? ?

Who re-installed it for you ?

Sounds like the ribbon cable has come loose...check inside.

As always remove all power sources when working inside the machine and take anti-static precautions.

Just make sure you are grounded. Dont walk across a fluffy carpet in slippers and reach in and grab a stick of RAM for instance...

They sell wrist straps but usually it is enough to be touching the metal chassis with one hand.
