In most cases, it IS useful. It does NOT delete your messages.

In Windows XP, there is no way to disable it.
(At least, I know there isnt on my computer)

If you are avoiding compacting because you have a lot of emails (and you think its going to take a long time):
I have over 7000 email messages. It only takes me about a minute to compact them.

(Not to mention, I have another inbox in outlook that holds around 2000 emails)

See BAK?
See BAK Run?
See BAK and actual extension differences?

.bak files are used for backing up your compacted messages before they are compacted, in case something goes wrong.

See, Uncle Bill is looking out for you, me, and the precious data we receive on the internet  :)

lol..yes...somebody told me to adjust the "Compact Check Count" in the registry to 0, but I can't find it at the place that was mentioned although I have all the right updates and patches for my XP Pro
******************************************************
This is what it said and the guy asking said it worked :'( ???

Look for this key in the Registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0
Double click the Compact Check Count
Select the Base option for Decimal and change the value to 0
This should change both the Hexadecimal and decimal values to zero.
Close the Registry.
********************************************************
But I can't find that item in my registry :'( :'(

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0"

The problem is that XP has OE version 6.0

Try searching for 6.0 instead of 5

Remember to backup your registry first  ;)
