Title: Windows Update (Vista), Endless Loop
Post by: Soviet_Genius on July 11, 2007, 08:28:46 PM
The Windows Update icon is in the system tray all the time, telling me to install updates. Once it finishes it tells me it needs to reboot to finish updating, so I do that. After it reboots the icon is still there telling me to install the same updates. I attached a screenshot of the updates. How do I stop this?

Is it giving any errors?

If the updates are giving you driver updates:
Restart in Safemode ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm#03 )
Right click "My Computer"
Click "Devices" on the left sidebar
Find the device that is being updated, and click the "Reinstall Driver" button
(Information From: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=582405 )

This should correct the issue

It doesn't give any error message. I already have the latest nVidia drivers, I'm not concerned about those.

Under update history are there any failed installations?

If so click the error code and you will be directed to the appropriate help. From these codes you may find that one update is causing them all to fail - in this case find the update that has a different error code, unselect it, install other updates. If that is successful then follow the troubleshooting steps to enable that update to install.

If this does not resolve the problem then try installing updates one at a time.

You should try exploring Microsoft's (http://microsoft.com) Vista help articles for information related to this...

Haha! The issue just started to occur on my computer!

(Probably not a good thing)

Use the following directions from the error information:
(Directly from Microsoft)
(Ignore the "Click to Open"'s

Windows Update error 80070002

If you receive Windows Update error 80070002 while checking for updates, you need to remove the temporary update files that Windows uses to identify updates for your computer. To remove the temporary files, stop the Windows Update service, delete the temporary update files, restart the Windows Update service, and then try to check for Windows updates again.

To stop the Windows Update service
You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

Click to open Administrative Tools.

Double-click Services.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Right-click the Windows Update service, and then click Stop.

 To delete temporary update files
Click to open Computer.

Double-click the local hard disk where Windows is installed, typically drive C.

Double-click the Windows folder, and then double-click the SoftwareDistribution folder.

Double-click the DataStore folder to open it, and then delete all files and folders in the folder.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Click the Back button. In the SoftwareDistribution folder, double-click the Download folder to open it, and then delete all files in the folder.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To restart the Windows Update service
You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

Click to open Administrative Tools.

Right-click the Windows Update service, and then click Start.

If the problem persists after you have followed the steps above, see this Knowledge Base article on the Microsoft Help and Support website or go to the Windows Update Support Center website to request support by e‑mail.

Note
Deleting temporary update files will help solve the problem, but it will also delete the history in Windows Update. You can still see which updates are installed on your computer by going to Installed Updates:

Yea I have a solution. Uncheck the KB935807 update and install all others. I have experienced, and a quick Google reveals the problem with this update is widespread. Hide it for now - Microsoft will get on to it at some stage... I believe it addresses the Windows Firewall so if you are not using that you will not be adversely affected.

"And Microsoft Says: 'Banana Phone!'"

Well, hopefully Microsoft will use its reporting technology to realise that something is wrong

SP1, where art thou?

Yes I have Vista Ultimate and are longing for a Service Pack, though with this recent update event (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1B3GGGL_enNZ223NZ223&q=KB935807&btnG=Search), I am doubtful about whether its arrival will bring much success...
