I decided to repost this under the proper Forum:
Please help - my old computer has "lost" it's IP address. I have been walked thru trying to establish a new one but I have been told it is corrupt and has a "WIN sock" error. I am running Windows 2000 NT. It is "networked" thru this computer with a Linksys wireless router. After reading some of these postings. I tried going to "run", then CMD, then IPCONFIG and it comes up with an IP address of 169.254.82.71. I also tried IPCONFIG/RENEW and it comes back with "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection: Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
The computer has not been used for internet use for awhile, so I just hooked up the wireless router. My daughter is the "techie" in the house and she is currently at work, so not sure if I hooked everything up correctly. But I would really like to get an IP address back on the old computer and be able to connect to the internet.
To make matters worse, my CD drives do not seem to be working. I tried to reinstall Windows and the computer will not read the CD.
Is there anything I can do, short of taking it in to be repaired or replacing it?

is it possible to provide the ping statistics of the following
goto command prompt and type
1]"ping 127.0.0.1" and note down the result
2]"ping ipaddress" and note down the result
that will help in resolving the issue.

Leave the computer running and reboot the router. Remove the power for about 10 seconds then reapply. Wait another 10 seconds then see if the computer connected.

Ok, here's the issue: To get the wireless connection to work, I have to install the software with the CD that came with it. Because my CD Rom does not read CD's (that's a separate issue), I am unable to install it and it can not connect with the internet to search for the software online. So, I am in a bit of a catch 22.
If I could just get the IP address to work, I could connect to the internet and then get the wireless router to work. I could hook up that computer directly to the cable modem and go online that way. I don't want to do that right now because that means THIS computer does not have access to the internet, so I would not be able to get on here and find out what the problem is. (I only have one cable modem box and it is currently hooked up to this one)
Like I said before, I have been told that I have a "WIN sock" error and a corrupt IP address by the technician at my cable company. He says the error can be fixed, but it takes some technical skill and some time. I am hoping that one of you gurus can walk me thru it. Does anyone have any experience with this issue?
Or, does anyone know how to get my CD Rom working? That way, maybe I could go to CMD and then IPCONFIG/RENEW and fix it that way?? When I try that now it says it can't do it because it can't connect because the wireless router is not installed.
Please help....

You might want to start a new topic about your CD-ROM issues
Why did your technition say that the IP address was corrupted? You cant tell without actually checking.
Did you try using the release command BEFORE renew?
CD ROM drive will NOT stop you from using the IPCONFIG command.
If you want, we can create a batch script that will reset your IP for you.

The technician could tell by the IP #. It is a default IP address and not a valid one. He walked my daughter thru a bunch of steps and was on the phone for about an hour with her when he determined that it was a WIN sock error and a corrupt IP address.
I tried IPCONFIG/RELEASE and I get the following message:
NO OPERATION CAN BE PERFORMED ON LOCAL AREA CONNECTION WHILE IT HAS ITS MEDIA DISCONNECTED
???

If it says that the "Media is Disconnected", then your computer is no plugged into the Internet... or connected to the Wireless connection.
Check your connections, and make sure that you are correctly connected to your WiFi connection.
(Aww. I created a program to reobtain your address for you and everything... too bad there isnt any way for you to get it onto the computer with the problem)

i suggested that( in her other post) and she has no way of getting to the broke computer.

What make model is the actual computer?
What make model is the wireless router?
Who are the internet service providers?
What is the operating system?

the ip which starts with 169..... is called as an APIPA. this is assigned by the computer and not the internet service provider.
first u need to un plug the modem and router from the computer and the main power socket and then shut down the computer and unplug from the main power socket and wait for 10min.
second restart the computer plug the modem first to the main power supply and then to the router and then the router to the main power supply and then to the computer and the computer will try to recognise this modem and router and try to acquire a new ip address. if this does not work
third click on start and in run type CMD this will open the command prompt. type in IPCONFIG /all
make note of the ip address, subnet mask, default gate and then run the ping test with all the three ip addresses. eg 168.192.0.0
fourth in the command prompt type IPCONFIG /RELEASE and then hit enter then IPCONFIG /RENEW hit enter.
fifth In CMD type NETSH INT IP RESET RESETLOG.TXT and hit enter
sixth In CMD type NETSH WINSOCK RESET and hit enter
now restart ur computer and see if it works.
