If I were to install Vista over XP would all of my existing programs be uninstalled? It's just I have some programs on my OS that I would not be able to re-install if they were to dissapear. Thanks.

Yes they would be gone...programs need to be re-installed whenever an OS is installed/re-installed.

Isnt there an Upgrade that you can do to avoid that loss?

Do you mean Windows anytime upgrade? (http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/37070041-1b90-4433-be0c-ab2855841b981033.mspx) Cause that one is only for Vista to a higher Vista.
I can't think of a way how that would be technically possible.

Or you could dual boot ......thats always a option..... :)

Not every program needs to be reinstalled, especially when upgrading, instead of doing a fresh install.
Vista can be upgraded from as far back as Windows 2000.
What you really need to check though is to see if the programs you want to keep are compatable with Vista.

Is Windows XP required for a Vista upgrade version? For Newegg.com's listing for Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116153), I saw: "This is an upgrade kit for upgrading from Windows XP or 2000." Surely, the other versions of Vista are the same for the upgrade requirements.

I erred, slightly. You cannot perform an upgrade from Windows 2000, you have to do a clean install, BUT, you still can pay the discounted upgrade license price.
