Thought I would register here and see if I could get some help fixing an Emachine. The power supply went bad, so I pulled one out of another computer. The machine turns on without even touching the power button. All lights come on, but windows is not running nor is there anything displaying on the screen. Could it be that an emachine will onlywork with a factory power supply? Appreciate any help at all.

Any ATX power supply will work in an Emachine as long if it fits the case. You should take great care in writing down / taking notes on what you unplug and plug back in when you start changing these. Its not hard at all but you must be careful ....
check this out from the site* If additional info is needed do a google search on "changing a power supply"

not real sure why it tries to run when you haven't even touched the power button except that something is wrong* ;)

Yeah I have changed it out with a couple different power supplies. I thought maybe the motherbord went bad or something else was causing the problem. I guess it is just a parts computer now.

just a thought, might try testing / replacing the cmos battery . It seems hard to believe the motherboard just went bad without any more info in regards to anything else which you might have noticed happening to this puter before it went haywire...
Usually- with emachines its the power supply, their mobo's just don't go bad..

Possibly a short on the motherboard caused by the defective power supply. You'll most likely need to replace both.
