Title: IE Favourites lost after Windows Upgrade - recoverable ??
Post by: burton on August 19, 2007, 06:29:34 AM
Hi,

Recently I had to urgently upgrade Windows 2000 to WinXP pro and due to lack of disk space on drive C, I had to do a fresh upgrade instead of just an update.

I thought Microsoft would have been able to preserve the internet settings and other basic windows configuration on my PC - but nope, I was let down by them. All my programs are no longer useable and even Microsofts own settings arent saved.

I use IE 7 and I am wondering is there a possible way to at least recover the links I had in my favourites on IE7 that I had before the upgrade? I didnt do a backup due to lack of time and too much confidence in Bill Gates. Maybe there is a specific folder I could look for, but seeing as it is on the same partition I dont have too much hope....

Normally a re-install wipes the drive in the beginning of the process...without backups i'm afraid you're out of luck.

It would be a good time to start thinking of a routine backup strategy.

i dont know if it will work its just a thought try to find out what file contains ie favorites then find a recovery tool sometimes you might be able to find what you need with that.  its just a thought dont know if it will work. but a back up plan is the way to go.  now that you have a fresh install you should make you a back up of your pc setup just like you want it.  use norton ghost is good for this.  hope i was of some sort of help

Try a recovery program like Recuva (http://www.recuva.com/). I don't think the chance of recovery is very good because windows have been reinstalled on the partition. The deleted favorites have most likely been overwritten, which makes them unrecoverable by any software solution.

Are you asking where the favorites folder is located?
The default location on 2000/XP is:
C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Username]\Favorites
