Well im not very good with computers i mreally not sure if i am posting this in the right location. But for example i have been playing warcraft 3 and the computer will just shut down it also has happened to me while i have been playing world of warcraft. recently i tried a system restore i think it was and what happened was that no matter what date i would tell it to go back to it would just say it could not be restored. occasionaly when i try to turn on the computer it will just turn off or stay on the start up screen. unless i disconnect it from the electricity. Please help some =D ty btw i have 512 MB of RAM on the sticker but 504 mon computer info 2002 version service pack 2, home edition

Hi Carloz, and welcome to computer hope.
Does your computer shutdown when you run other applications?
Is it only when you run world of warcraft?
If i were you, i'd uninstall the game and re-install it.
could be a virus but...

It has also happened before while i have been running regular things like Instant messenger, sometimes even the internet. But those are just random when ever i play warcraft 3 ow World of warcraft it will shut down in about 5 mins after game starts

What make and model computer is it? Are you using onboard video, or an add-on video card? Have you made any hardware changes to it since you've owned it? Has this problem been getting gradually worse?
BTW, to cut the power when you've tried to start it and it won't complete a normal startup, try holding the power button for about 4 seconds, maybe a little longer; that may turn it off and you won't need to unplug it.

Since when has this started happening?
Do you have AV?
Has your AV got the latest virus definitions?
Has your AV detected and deleted any files before this started happening?

well im not very computer smart only 14 years old i havnt made any changes to the computer since it was bought so it has standard stuff i guessand i tried holding it down when ever i do that it just stays on start up screen where it says compaq in big letters or sometimes it will turn on the light and turn back off intstantly. Also idk if you could call it getting worse but it occasionally happens now before it would only happen while running games, sych as warcraft 3 or world of warcraft.

well my AV is norton antivirus it would usually when ever i scan just decect a tracker cookie or something iand i would delete it

can you think of anything you've installed or viewed on your computer which might have caused this?

Hey JXY, instead of saying 'AV', can you please just type 'antivirus' because I got confused while reading your post, I thought you were misspelling 'AVG'.
It just makes it more clear.
As for this problem, check if your computer is overheated.
Also it would be helpful to tell us how many RAM you have. ;)

Carloz said that his pc was working fine before. i don't understand why he would remove RAM from his computer. Plus, i don't think warcraft takes up that much memory.

hmmm....good point Carbon. I seem to recall several people posting that they've encounterd mysterious computer problems, mostly related to or after installing warcraft. could be a online virus.

something that might have been the prob i guess could be when you play warcraft 3 you sometimes play custum games and u have to load maps? also i have 512 MB of RAM... not alot i know

that should be plenty.
You could check how much your video ram is.
also, try closing all windows, close all aplication running on system tray.
and run warcraft in a window.
then right click on task bar > task manager > and see what cpu usage you're at. as well as how much memory is being used.
although i highly doubt you don't have enough ram.

We;; i know the RAM is not the problem because a month ago or so i could run it perfectly. but Warcraft 3 isnt the problem because my computer shuts down when i am on AoL instant messanger /itunes or sometimes even jsut on internet

Remove a side panel from the machine and place a small fan with the airflow blowing into the case...if the symptoms go away you have an overheating problem.

Overheating will definately cause you're computer to shutdown randomly.
However, just out of curiosity, you didn't change your processor voltage through bios setup did you?
overclocking if you don't know what you're doing can be highly dangerous, and can fry you're motherboard, if you're not careful.
If your computer is overheating, then i suggest you buy a new fan. ;)

He has stated his expertise level as novice...i doubt overclocking is the issue.
Let's keep it basic til we can sort this mess out.
2 threads and 4 days later and no further along.,,let's find out if it's heat related first and go from there.

ok so i guess what i will try is removing back of computer with screw drivers and placing a fan there

the fans were not the problem i just removed the side panel and checked all 3 fans were working

what do u mean by tested as in if it turns off anyway with the fan just turn it back up and try again?

Basically open the cover of your computer and let another fan blow at it.
That kind of fan we mean is like a tower fan or something you use to cool yourself off instead of an air con.
Another thing I should point out, just because all 3 fans are working doesn't mean the motherboard/Hard drive/video cards are cooling down from them....

A fan.
well, the only difference now is, instead of you that's hot, it's the computer.

If you want to help then help out rather asking question to a 14years old boy.
JXY all threads were just confusing.
Boy get a fan and place it facing your computer after removing the side cover. Overload your computer by playing the game togehter with media player for atleast an hour and it shuts down then get back to us for the next level.

well ty u guys for the help that turned out to be the problem it was overheating i just tried the fan opened warcraft itunes Msn AIm and limewire and it didnt shut down thanks alot guys amd one more question would they sell those computer fans at best buy or do u have to be ordered or something ??

so i take all 3 of the fans or is the way to know if there is a specific one i need to replace

well, you can always test them yourself to see if any of the fans aren't cooling.

Back home n place it back then do the test again. The fan that is attached to the parentboard (motherboard).

I can't believe noone has directed him to that page yet lol.
If your fans are spinning at around 1000-2000RPM in the BIOS, do not make noises, are connected properly, and seem to be blowing air in the right direction without too much dust intervening then chances are you don't need to change them! Try cleaning your computer out as best as possible by using the above link as a guide.
Ground yourself and do not use a vacuum cleaner.

You could always turn off automatic restart on system failure. If you right click on my computer and go into the properties you will see a tab called Advanced. Click on that. In there at the bottom is the startup and recovery section. In there there is a button called settings, click on that. Once in the settings go down about half way and you will see a section called System Failure. In that section there is a check box at the bottom called Automatically Restart. Make sure that is unchecked. This should prevent your system from restarting every time it encounters a problem. This way your system should run while you look for the source of the problem.

in the contrtol panel , there will be a power options , if u change the setting it will shut down anonymously, do not change these settinbgs or else change in regedit
