Title: Unresponsive taskbar for about 2mins afterstartup
Post by: astrohack3r on August 29, 2007, 01:44:02 PM
After my computer starts up, only the timer shows on the taskbar and i cannot do anything until a couple of minutes later when more processes start (not sure which) and it works again.
I would much like this problem to be fixed.
Any help offered would be appreciated.

Have you ran virus spyware scans ?

Does it do this in safe mode ?

How many programs have you got running in your taskbar far right beside the clock !

I have ran AVG anti-virus, shows nothing, am getting onto spyware.
Will try in safe mode.
As for programs in the taskbar only 2 internet icons, one the computer screen icon showing internet is connected, and one the bt voyager wireless utility, and the AVG anti-virus icon

Sorry try running those scans in safe mode !

Post a hi-Jack this log for CB-matt or someone to look at !

Has it always done this ??

You could try looking to see what starts up with your computer

Built Into windows is a special tool called "Micosoft System Configuration Utility" or simply "MSconfig which is what you will have to type into run in the start menu..

Designed to help you troubleshoot problems with your computer, MSconfig can also be used to ensure that your compter boots faster and crashes less.

Most people know that the more programs you have running on you computer at once, the more likely it is that you computer will either run slowly of even crash. What most poepl don't know is that every time you boots your computer a whole mess of Hidden programs load in the background. some of these hidden programs are essential but most aren't. Turning off some of these hidden programs can significantl increse your computers performance and reliability....

How to use MSCONFIG in Windows XP

Here is how to use MSCONFIG in Windows XP to disable some of the unnecessary programs that automatically load on start-up. Disabling these programs will help your computer boot faster and crash less.

1. In Windows XP, go to Start > Run

2. Type MSCONFIG in the "Open:" box and then either press enter on your keyboard or click on the OK button.

3. This launches Microsoft's System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab (the tab at the far right).

4. This takes you to a page with a list of "startup items." Startup items are programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM.

In Windows XP, all of Windows' essential programs are loaded through something called "Windows Services." This means that most of the startup items you see in XP are completely optional and can be turned off. However, a good rule of thumb is to disable only those programs that you recognize and don't need to have running all the time. When in doubt, leave it on. Or, better still, check out Paul "PacMan" Collins' huge "Startup Applications" list at http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php. This list of over 13,000 startup items you may encounter in MSCONFIG tells you which items are absolutely necessary, which items are optional, and which items you should definitely uncheck.....

If I sound rude I don't mean too, cause i know all you guys are trying to help, but i know my way fairly well around a computer, and msconfig is already apparent to me, only avg is selected in the startup column.
I will post a hijack this log now in a min
I do appreciated all your thoughts  :)

Oh and the anti virus and spyware scans returned nothing, run in safe mode, however i noticed that the taskbar was responsive immediately when booted up in safe mode, so that must be a start

well, you see, there's a bit of a problem there, this happened when i reput windows back onto my machine about a month or 2 ago and put all the software back onto it, i was then too lazy to put some time asside to fix  this problem, so if it is software related, it could be anything i have on here

Ok no problem....

ill send your hi jack log to cb mat see if he can see anything....

Typical programs that might break machine -

1. Lime wire - or any p2p networks
2. Xxx - any content generally has virus
3. misc software downloaded of the internet

Sometimes your AV software can cause this, particularly with real time scanning. It happens because some files are not loaded and the AV is scanning them before they load. To rule out your AV as the cause, disconnect from the internet, disable the AV from loading at startup, then reboot. If everything works normally, reenable your AV and look at its settings to see if there is way around this. If not, at least you know your AV is on the job.

I use limewire occasionally and am careful with it but if you think its a possible threat i've got rid of it, along with a couple of other bits and pieces i have got off the internet that i don't need.
As for the Av, i'll try that now, thanks to both

I disabled AVG from the startup and from severvices but didn't make any difference, however, i have a suspition that it is not AVG but Mcafee site advisor that starts from services instead of startup that is doing it, will check it out

Did you re-install your MBoard drivers after the re-install of Windows ? ?
Do you have MS Office installed on this machine ? ?
Any Norton products ? ?

Sorry I haven't been around for a while, have been away from the computer
If I'm honest I cannot remember whether I did put in the CD for the motherboard, will have to try and find that
I do have MS Office on this machine
And I do not have any Norton products, I personally don't like them.
How might MS Office make a difference may I ask?

Some Office apps pre-load themselves to a ready state. This can slow down the boot times...

If you're on dialup and IE is set to 'never dial a connection' as mine is then Automatic Windows Update will do this to you.
It sits there looking to find a connection via IE that will never come, I set mine to disabled and update manually a week after Update Tuesday to be sure Microsoft has no issues.
I would think auto update would be the default setting and as it happened after a new install of windows... well.
The settings can be changed in 'services', you could prowl around in services anyway you never know, just be careful what you do.
Blackviper has both the defaults and the tweaks if you're unsure.
