Title: Windows 98se won't take any network card
Post by: gimpy530 on September 30, 2007, 09:19:51 PM
OK, so I tried 2 network cards I had sitting around, each got the same error and all that when attempting to install, so I figured that this old computer has 5 volt PCI slots, and the cards can only take 3.3, and that was the problem

So I got a card off my manager at work which will work with 5 volt PCI slots.  Now, I put it in, booted, 98 saw a new device, I pointed to the correct inf on the new driver floppy, it copied files over, clicked next, it wanted the 98se CD, then copied more files form that, rebooted, and on reboot I got an error saying that the card may not be installed properly, oh joy.

The card is now seen under "network" in control panel, I left the IP and all that to automatic, tried to ping my firewall, get the error "transmit failed, error code 10043", I then did an ipconfig and got "cannot read IP configuration". I get the same errors even after setting up a manual IP, subnet, gateway, and DNS.

I go into device manager, and update the drivers for the card, again I clcik have disk, and point it to the correct inf on the floppy, and it copies files, then copies files from the 98se CD, reboot, same error on start, same error with ping and ipconfig

Now the first 2 crads got completely different errors, and I'm pretty sure the 5 volt thing was the problem there, but I don't know what the problem is on this network card......since I'm not good with 98se, it may be a PEBKAC situation.

So, I have reinstalled the drivers several times now, messed with every network setting, yet still device manager gives me error code 10 (device not present, not working, or no drivers). So I have a feeling since I know little about 98se, this may be a PEBKAC situation, but how can I get this card working on this computer?

Intel PRO/100+ PCI Fast Ethernet Network/Managment LAN Adapter
Windows 98se
Intel Pentium 1, 120mhz
32MB RAM
old piece of crap

As stated in my first post, the card is: Intel PRO/100+ PCI Fast Ethernet Network/Managment LAN Adapter

The Encore ENLGA-1320 Driver you linked me to was from the first network card I tried, one that seemed to have the 5 volt problem, the current card is Intel PRO/100+ PCI Fast Ethernet Network/Managment LAN Adapter

I have a tried 4 drivers from driverguide.com now, none will install, setup.exe on them all won't run within Windows, but will in DOS.  So I ran them form DOS and all I get are errors saying the device is not present.

It may be easier to find a card that has drivers for Win98 than trying to track down drivers for the cards you have...

The card that is in there now came with a disk that *has* 98se drivers.....as stated in my first post, I installed them, and guess what, it didn't work

This (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4131.html) has helped me in the past for a few 98SE quirks...
Note: It is unofficial so backup any important data...although i've never had issues...

For the price i would still try a brand new network card that has Win98 drivers included...
If it still doesn't work you may be looking at a MBoard issue.

OK, I have tried 3, yes 3, network cards....2 were new, 1 was not

new card #1, had 98se drivers, seemed like that 5 volt issue from my first post, another site online even stated that that card does not work with 5 volt PCI slots

old card had 98se drivers, same exact errors as the first new card, 5 volt problem

new card #2 from my manager at work, it got different errors than the first 2 card I tried, I know for a fact it works with 5 volt PCI, my manager has used the same model card on 5 volt PCI slots

Now, new card #2 I know should work with 5 volt PCI and Windows 98se and it's not working correctly, I have no idea why.....if I buy a fourth network card, I think I will just be wasting money that I don't have to spend

To me it does not look like a hardware problem with the card or motherboard, but instead it seems like a software roblem, with 98se or the drivers.....but I could be wrong, since I often am, in fact, an idiot

You're not an idiot...an idiot would have given up without a solution...
Try swapping in a known working PSU of equal or greater wattage...use the newest card.
Also try another device in that same slot such as a modem or sound card just to eliminate the slot as the culprit.

I already tried the unofficial service pack

Tried a sound card in that slot, worked fine.....I don't have a spare PSU, but it doesn't seem like a PSU issue
