Whenever I plug a USB device such as an MP3 player or an external DVD drive, my sound is lost completely within 5-30 minutes unless I unplug my USB devices. Another symptom is that I can only stream 2 seconds of YouTube video before it completely stops. I'm using SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio for my soundcard and Intel 82865G graphics controller. Any idea on why this is happening, and how I can fix this? Thanks.

I'd like to add that I tried upgrading my sound card driver, but it says I've got the latest.
-
Bump.

If I were you I'd reseat both cards and blow out any dust inside the machine.

SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
I assume, this is on-board chip?
but it says I've got the latest
Even so, driver may be corrupted.
Download newest driver, anyway.
Go to Control Panel, uninstall current driver, "remove" your sound controller (SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio).
Restart Windows, let it find "new" hardware, and its "new" driver.

Didn't work bro, sound failed again.

Does this also happen with USB device plugged in, or regardless?

Glad to know that someone has the same problem as me. I don't know much about computers. but the symptoms seem to be the same as yours Violator (Well.. I'm actually not too sure about the USB symptom because my sound usually doesn't work anyways. So I can't tell the difference) Yea. If someone can help that would be great. Thx

Whenever a USB device is plugged in.

Did you try update your USB drivers, then?

Worked for a long while (a couple hours) before it failed. Any other ideas?

Worked for a long while
Sound, or video?
When you don't have any USB device plugged in, do BOTH, sound and video work fine?

Sound, for files on my computer. When I don't have a USB device plugged in, it works fine (if the cable is plugged into the computer, but not plugged into the device, it works fine also).
When I streaming something (like on YouTube) and 'the failure happens', then both the sound and video stop, I can only stream the first two seconds of the video.

Which USB ports...front or back of the machine ? ?
If the front use only the rear ones and see if anything changes.
Or are you using a USB hub for those devices ? ?
If so the hub may be shot.

I tried using the front ports instead of the back ports, and the same thing happened. Any other ideas?

It just happened right now with no USB devices plugged in. I had a USB drive plugged in earlier, but it was long disconnected when my sound just failed. If anyone can shed any light on how I can fix this, I'd really appreciate it.

here is the solution...ditch the soundcard. i had it, its a piece of junk. mine lasted about a month.

Is it really a sound card problem though? I do lose sound, but I'm not sure why I would only be able to stream the first two seconds of a streaming video (ie. YouTube) before it stops.

anything is better then the soundmax card. you can buy just a cheap sound blaster audigy for $32.00CAD or an X-Fi (recommended) for just $50.00CAD. i am not 100% sure that this problem is caused by the soundmax card, but i have heard of many different people having many different problems and the card is the root of it.

Replacing the sound card is definitely worth a try. When I upgraded my computer from 98 to XP I found my sound would cut out randomly in games and so forth. Turns out that my AWE32 was just not friendly enough to XP. And I never tried to do anything on UTube since at this point I didn't have the net, so I cannot confirm any video-type problems.
