Ok ya'll, I got a question.... I have the full version of Windows XP and have used it on my home computer recently. If I take that CD and try to install XP on a different computer, will it install? Please let me know soon. Thanks! ;D

flame.....If the Win XP is a multi user license attached to it then go for it ......However if it is a single user license...
you may have problems activating it when you install on another pc......you will probably have to phone Micro Soft and explain to them what your up to . I am assuming that the win XP disk you have is legal and is complete with a valid product key . So to answer your question in a word........YES

flame......Have a real good look at your Win XP cd.......
look at the front side and see if its a OEM or retail version ....also where is the product key displayed ?
If your thinking about putting it on a friends pc........thats not really legal , unless its a multi user license.

Well, I'm not sure about the OEM thing, the product key is on the back of this folder that has the Windows XP CD inside. (I got the stuff from CompUSA brand new from the box). Also, I am not looking to put this Windows operating system on a friend's computer, but on another one of my own that I am erasing very soon. I still have no idea about what type of license I have on the CD however......

If you have a single user licence, you can install XP on your mates PC, so long as you get rid of XP from your PC. If you keep yours and install it on the other computer, then you officially become a criminal.
So, theft is a misdemenour. How much do you need to nick for it to become grand theft, a felony charge?
Of course, if you want to be a Good Boy, you'll probably have to phone up MS to explain what you want to do. As a 'foreigner', I've found them to be a bit of a pain in the posterior (their's a language barrier despite the fact we're supposedly speaking the same language - odd, huh?). Good luck.

Ok, but I don't KNOW if I have a single or multiple user license! Also, I'm installing XP on another one of MY computers!!!!! The computer is for nobody else's use but mine! So can anybody tell me if I have a multiple or single user license, or is it impossible to tell?!

Flame, there should be a lot of legal mumbo jump that comes with your XP, as with anything nowadays. Where did you buy your XP? If you just bought an average joe XP then it will probably be single-user I'm guessing.

When you installing XP, what's this about ringing up Microsoft? Do you have to do this everytime you install XP? And how would they know if I installed the same XP on lots of computers?

flame......From your reply , you have the retail version.....if it was a OEM it would say . So just go ahead and install it .......Should you run into any issues with activation ........You have formatted your pc and are reinstalling your WIN XP which you have the product code for on your PC.

Actually, this computer I want to install XP on has NEVER had XP on it. It's had windows ME for 2 years. Now, I want to take the XP CD that I used on my new computer that I just upgraded to XP, and try to install XP onto my old computer using that same CD. I just want to make sure that I won't screw up the old computer by trying to use the XP CD on it.

flame... You won't ......Just do a clean install and then get the updates from M/S
