Title: Deleting unwanted files from the fonts folder
Post by: Westsider on November 07, 2007, 07:48:18 AM
I'm runnning Windows XP service pack 2 on my home computer. My son downloaded a file sharing program without my knowledge. When I found out I had him delete everything but in the meantime a couple thousand zip files were downloaded into the fonts folder and I can't figure out how to delete them as there is no way to view hidden files in the fonts folder.  I have taken precautions of installing new security and turning the firewall back on (not sure how it got turned off in the first place but I have my suspicions..) but the computer is running painfully slowly. I need to get these files deleted and none of the typical help sites have a FAQ that deals with this issue.

I'd appreciate your help.  Thanks

How do you know then, they're there? Besides, what do you mean by, there is no way to see hidden files?

Because when I look in properties for the fonts folder it says there are 20,000 files in that folder and 5mb of content. A little large for about 100 fonts, don't you think? Plus when I do a scan, I can see these files being scanned.

Additionally, by clicking on the "advanced" button in fonts properties, the box labeled "hidden" is grayed out, not allowing me to see those files.

Are you sure you are logged on the Admin account ? ?
You should be able to change the folder view settings...
If not try in safemode.

I'll try that again, but I did log in as administrator and was not able to change the settings. I don't know why.

I appreciate the suggestion.

Have you tried enabling view hidden files a different way?

1. Right Click Start.
2. Select Control Panel.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option.
7. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
8. Click Apply.
9. Click OK.

Still no luck. I cannot enable the "hidden"  box in fonts properties.

Did you try Safe Mode, as patio suggested?
If yes, get HijackThis: http://majorgeeks.com/Trend_Micro_HijackThis_d5554.html, and post its log at "Computer Viruses and Spyware" forum.
