Title: Windows XP - Volume Control
Post by: Jimmy_el_Shoe on November 16, 2007, 10:21:26 AM
Hi I'm having trouble with my 'Volume Control' - I still have the icon in the bottom right corner of the task bar and it says its open in the normal taskbar but when i click it, it doesnt open properly. Same if i go through, Start > Access. > Ent. > Vol Control.

Does your system use onboard audio or an add-on sound card?  Open Device Manager and expand the section of Sound, video and game controllers.  What's the exact title of your PCI Audio Device?  If you double-click on it, does the Properties panel say it's working properly?

I think it's onboard audio as it's a laptop.

The sound still works, but i can only adjust the volume up or down with my laptop controls. Rather than all the other bits.

Nothing showing up on device manager.

Try this.  Go to Start, Run, and type dxdiag in the box.  After the DirectX Diagnostic Tool has finished launching, select the Sound tab.  What does it show under Device, mainly, the name there?  Likewise, what's the name and version shown under Drivers?

Before this problem started, what was the normal behavior when opening the sound control panel from the icon in your system tray (the bottom right corner icons)?   If I click my icon (desktop PC running Win XP), it just opens a control panel.  I cannot minimize that to the taskbar; it just closes back to the icon in the system tray.  Did your system normally allow putting a button on the taskbar for your sound control panel?

You might visit the website of your computer manufacturer and search for the sound driver for your computer.  Download it and reinstall it.  I found a site which might have the driver for your computer but I can't be sure.  It's at http://list.driverguide.com/list/company1690/

I may not able to help further with this.  If anyone else has ideas, please chime in.

It's not in the taskbar, the bit on the bottom right by the clock. in the original pic, its the icon to the right of the msn icon.

It used to open a volume control thing, it acts like its open but its hidden somewhere.

Im 99% sure its nothing to do with the drivers. I can still hear sound, the volume control box doesnt open

Sorry I don't know the right terminology.

No need to be pedantic.
