When starting Win 3.1 from DOS 6.22 , with the command C:\win, windows loads with the Win mouse cursor frozen dead center of the screen. The DOS cursor works fine when navigating the programs in DOS mode. I have found 3 Mouse files within the DOS and Windows files:-
MOUSE.COM in C: This is MS ver 626 for the DOS mouse.
MOUSE.DRV- in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM This is MS ver 8.20 for Windows
mouse.
MOUSE.INI- Identifies mouse as PS/2 mouse.
I am able to navigate using the keyboard, and by using File Manager, I reached each one of the mouse files and tried a click on each one of them. The only one I received results from was when I clicked MOUSE.COM , the DOS mouse file. The mouse the works fine for the entire time I remain in windows. When I end the session, and return later, I must do the routine again.
My sytem is:-
Asus A7V Mother Board Athlon 750 Processor RAM 786 MB
HDD Conner 350 MB Microsoft PS/2 Port mouse
I use HDD removable racks to facilitate entire HDD backup, with another complete identical HDD ready to go in ten minutes. The 350 MB HDD is never used for internet use. It is completely removed from the machine and replaced with a Win XP HDD for use on the internet. So there is no chance of the 350 MB HDD being infected.
I am unable to determine the cause of the mouse cursor failure. Could you please advise as to what the possible cause might be, and if it involves the editing of a particular file, please advise the procedure necessary to effect the edit change. Thank you, Condor

Can I ask why your using Win 3.1 still?
And to be honest, I doubt you're going to find many people that can help...that stuff pre-dates me.
I only just remember Win 3.11, and I'm 21...and most of the people on here are kids still in school.

Primarily for security. It does not have the Microsoft cute little file that leaves fingerprints on the documents generated by it. Every version of windows after 3.1 , contains that file. If you ask, "What file"; I shall have to play a Ronald Reagn and George Bush senior, and say, "I don't recall".

Install any generic mouse driver for Win98 and it should work...

... The DOS cursor works fine when navigating the programs in DOS mode.
By DOS mode, you mean real DOS, right? Before Windows ever loads, right?
Not a 'dos window' within Windows.
And by DOS cursor, do you mean that literally?
Or do you mean that the mouse works fine in DOS?
Just for fun, test the mouse:
Boot the computer to Dos. Don't load Windows.
At the command line, execute edit
At the top of the Edit screen, you should see some menu options.
"File" should be to the top left.
Can you click it, and get a pull down menu, with the mouse?
If you can, then it sounds like the mouse itself is ok, and that you are loading a mouse driver when booting DOS.
...

I'm not going to attempt to comment from memory. It has been too long.
I do have a Win 3.1 machine here, but it hasn't been on in quite a while.
I'll have to try to move whatever is piled on it away, and try to boot it.
I just can't remember what the procedure is with installing/setting up a mouse within Windows itself. Maybe I can have a look around on it, and refresh myself.
For DOS, it was done in config.sys and/or autoexec.bat.

That just sounds suspicious...
Not that I care...lol.

Install any generic mouse driver for Win98 and it should work...
A mouse driver for Win98 would work under Win 3.1 ?
In my experience i say 85 % of the time Yes.

Willy W:-Thank you. Yes it all starts with real DOS. The mouse cursor is a
small blue square which responds to all movements of the
physical mouse while using dosshell and MS Works for DOS.
When I wish to use Windows, I type win at the DOS prompt,
and Windows loads completely, but the mouse (arrow head)
cursor is frozen at center screen.
The last time I used this HDD, was approximately six months
ago; at that time the mouse worked normal in both DOS and Win.
The sys.ini file does state under the [boot] section, mouse.drv=
mouse.drv. I shall try the file name change. I just do not
understand why the mouse works normal in Win after I click the
mouse.com file.
patio:- Thank you. I shall try using a Win 98 mouse driver.
Sid:--Thank you. Should your major be "Computer Science", please pay
attention to the adjunct professors here at Computer Hope;
and try reading the Forum pages from the back to the front.
It will reveal things which may help you solve many problems.
To all of you, Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. I shall post the results of my attempt at fixing this. Condor
