Title: I.E. 7 versus Firefox
Post by: Szpixman on November 30, 2007, 09:43:03 AM
Hi Broni,
I use IE 7 and have not had any persistant problems with it (yet).  But was curious about something the guys who built my computer had said.  They referred to Firefox as a "Dumb Browser" (not in a bad way) and did recommend using it if I ever had IE problems...could you tell me what they meant by that?

If feel lucky...I haven't had the kind of trouble with IE that I see in this forum.
Should I knock on wood or something?

Thanks

My main concern about IE has always been its security issues.
Below, you'll find some graphs from one of the main security companies, www.secunia.com.
Look closely at number of issues, their severity, and how they were eventually fixed.
What is even more important, when some security issue comes up with Firefox, usually there is a fix in matter of hours, with IE, it takes days.

Here we go:

IE 6:

IE 7:

Firefox 1.x:
http://secunia.com/product/4227/?task=statistics
(http://secunia.com/graph/?type=sol&period=all&prod=4227)

Firefox 2.x:
http://secunia.com/product/12434/?task=statistics
(http://secunia.com/graph/?type=sol&period=all&prod=12434)

Furthermore...
To me, IE has been always long time behind other browsers new trends (how long did it take Micro$oft to implement tabbed browsing? years?).
With Firefox, and all its add-ons, it's fun to play with them, and adjust your browser to your needs.
IE is just as it is - dull.

This is a very interesting subject, and I'm sure more people will post here with their arguments. I think, I just started with some thoughts.

Thanks Broni...think I'll make the switch next time IE acts up.

Another thing...
If you look through posts about IE problems, they often starts out of blue, without any serious computer changes, and they are often really hard to fix, if fixable in some simple way.
Also, with the particular problem, some solutions will work for some people, but not for others.
