Title: Connecting wirelessly on a new XP pro
Post by: irishgirl982 on December 14, 2007, 12:16:20 AM
Hey, everyone! I'm hoping that someone can help me with a little problem.

History: I just got a new HP computer with Vista on it. My friend helped me install XP Professional to replace Vista and XP is now running.

The Problem: I have three computers and two of them (including the new one) have to be connected wirelessly. When Vista was running on it, the wireless system worked. However, now that I have XP pro on it, it's not working.

Things I've noticed: This version of XP is completely missing "Network tasks" and "view wireless networks" that I know are on the XP Home version that I have installed on my laptop.

Please help? Is there anyway I connect wirelessly on this version of XP with those things missing?

Thank you so much!
-Lori

Go to

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System

Select the Hardware tab

Select Device Manager

Do you see any yellow ? or !'s

Look down the list and click on the + next to Network Adapters

What items do you have listed under Network Adapters?

Thank you for replying!!

When I go in there, I see several yellow question marks.
It looks like this:

? Other devices
-?CanoScan
-?Ethernet Controller
-?Ethernet Controller
-?PCI device
-?SM Bus Controller
-?Video controller (VGA Compatible)

Unfortunately, I don't see anything that says "Network Adapters" :(

Your friend forgot to re-install your motherboard drivers...
Did you recieve a "Driver" CD with this machine ? ?

The Ethernet controllers are for the Network.

No, there were NO CDs that came with the new computer. I had to make my own Vista Restore System CD.

Are these Motherboard Drivers something I can download online and onto my external hard drive?

Sure.
But first you should DLoad and install Everest Home and run a report...save it to a text file and copy/paste the "Computer Summary" portion here...
This program will tell you and us exactly what is in that machine which will assist in tracking down the correct drivers.

Try not to make too many changes to the system in the meantime as it will only muck things up further...

Hey, guys! I really appreciate all the help you're giving me on this forum, however, I've encountered yet another problem! (figures!)

It was suggested that I download and install Everest Home onto the new computer. I placed the exe file for it on my external hard drive and tried to load it from the new computer. However, it keeps telling me the file is corrupted. I downloaded 2 different versions with the same result. I then tried to install it onto a different computer and it worked. Perhaps I'm missing another driver that's preventing me from installing the program?

Thanks again, everyone!

What is the make and model of your laptop?

Try copying it from the external drive to the laptop drive and install it that way...

nickc1976 - It's a Toshiba Satalite laptop

Patio - But the laptop is not the one that needs the program installed onto it. The desktop is the new computer.

OK i'm confused now...
Everest DLoad is on the external drive ? ?
Did you try hooking the external drive to the desktop...copying/moving Everest to that HDD and installing from there and it didn't work ? ?
If you are getting CRC errors then the DLoad itself is corrupt.
Try a fresh DLoad but it should be on the drive you want to install it onto.

Yes, I downloaded the exe and put the file onto the external drive. Then I plugged the external drive into the desktop (new computer with no internet) and tried to install it onto the desktop that way. I thought, too, that that particular file was corrupted, so I went and found another version from another download site. That didn't work either. So, wondering if maybe the desktop was the one with the problem, I tried to install the exe onto the laptop (old computer WITH working internet)... and it worked.

I hope that clears things up. Now, I'm wondering if perhaps the desktop is missing an additional driver that prevents me to install exe's. I apologize for the confusion. I'm really not all that good with this kind of stuff!

Thanks again!

Click here (http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp) and enter the details of your laptop. You will then be able to download and install the software that you need.

irishgirl,
A missing driver should not prevent installing an .exe...
But first try copying the .exe to the desktop machine...right now you are trying to install it from the external. Not sure if it should make a difference but worth a try. Grab a fresh DLoad as well.

Or you can try another small program called Belarc Advisor also FREE that will provide the same info...

Nick: I'm sorry if I'm getting really confused, but the laptop is not the one that is missing drivers. It's the HP desktop that is the one that's missing stuff. Wouldn't I need to download the drivers for the desktop?

Patio: I did copy the exe to the desktop. I was not trying to install from the external hard drive. It was just weird because the laptop was allowing me to install the program while the desktop is not. I'll try another download, and that other program you mentioned and let you know what happens. Thanks again!

Okay, I'm about at the end here... I don't know what else I can do.

I tried installing Belarc Advisor and this is the error message I received:

An I/O error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file.

Something else has to be missing on it. Why else would nothing install? HOWEVER, I tried installing one of my art programs that I had on my external hard drive (openCanvas) and it WORKED. Why would that work, but the other files wouldn't?

I'm thinking about just finding a copy of XP home for this machine... it's not worth all the trouble! What do you guys think? Thank you!

That wont help, it will still need drivers. In order to get any version of XP working drivers will need to be installed.

When you installed XP Pro on the HP desktop machine, was the installation interupted in any way, or did you get any error messages?
It may be worth re-installing XP if you haven't got any other programs or files on there yet.

At this point i would be contacting HP....with a serial 3 or something they should be able to give you a decent idea of the drivers for that machine...

Any new computer  that comes with vista has hardware only compatible with VISTA. You will not be able to install (revert) windows xp unless you install xp compatible hardware.

That's not true wrwss. It is just a question of finding XP drivers. They might not be available from the manufacturer of the laptop, but the manufacturers who made the hardware installed in the laptop will provides drivers for at least XP and Vista. (It doesn't make business sense at this point not to support XP.)

Thank you so much, everyone. My friend is going to come over sometime next week and help me with the computer. I'll let you all know if we succeed. :)

Thanks for all of your help! My friend was able to find the wireless driver and install it onto my computer. However, she was not able to connect via the ethernet connection. It says "Limited or no connectivity" and then it says "the reason for this is because it could not establish a new IP address for my computer" It says "please click repair" Once clicked, it says it cannot repair because it cannot establish a new IP address. My friend googled  this problem and was unable to find an answer.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
