hey what do i do when i get a new computer and want to transfer all the music from my i tunes to the new computer cause some of the cd's i don't have anymore and when i plug the ipod it only gives me the option to sync and erase
-
iTunes itself doesn't store any music. It stores only list(s)/library of your music files, which are stored somewhere on your computer.
Unless you changed the default location, you'll find them in My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music
just copy them to CD/DVD, and transfer them to your new computer.
-
so i would have to copy every cd thats on my ipod then put it in my new computer? thats will take some time lol
-
If you have all of your music on your iPod (how big is it?), you can simply hook it up to your new computer, and move all music from iPod to new computer.
-
it's like a 20 gig ipod ,ok im gonna go try that now
-
Yeah, you can use those as just any other regular external drives.
-
ok i put i tunes on my new computer but i don't see the option of putting my music a from the ipod onto the new computer it only says erase and sync
-
No, no...Open Windows Explorer, iPod will be visible as separate drive. Copy all music files from your iPod to any folder of your choice on your new computer.
THEN, you open ITunes, and import all those songs to iTunes library.
-
ok im running xp and i went into my computer and found the device but there's only like notes and stuff no option for music ,and i don't see windows exploer in the start menu
-
Start>Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer
-
If you have similar iPod, as I do, in iPod directory go iPod Control folder>Music
-
ok i can see the ipod as a seperate device but it is not giving me any option to copy all the music
-
Can you see music files?
-
no, but i know there is music on there
-
What folders do you have there? List them.
-
You should see some numbered folders. look at my screenshot below:

What do you have in subfolders of those folders?
-
could it be because i was running vista on the last comp it was on now im going back to xp on the new one?
Nope, it doesn't matter.
-
only instructions
-
Right click on your iPod drive, click Search, and type in:
*.mp3
Click Search.
-
it says there are none but i unplugged it and the music was on there
-
OK. I suspect why.
In Windows Explorer, go Tools>Folder Options>View tab.
Put a checkmark into: "Show hidden files and folders".
Click OK.
Close Windows Explorer.
Reopen Windows Explorer, and check your iPod drive again.
-
awsome it worked i can see ipod control now im gonna see if i can copy the music
-
ok i can get to the music now but how do i save it to my new itunes
-
You can simply select all those F00, F01 folders at once, and copy them to any folder of your choice on your HD. The best way would be to create some new folder, like MP3...
-
Transfer music to your hard drive, first. Then, open iTunes, and go File>Add file to library
-
alright it's working thanks yet again for the help i would have burnt like over 100 cds and that would have been a day straight of burning lol so thanks for saving me the pain.
