Title: Why wont my desktop work?
Post by: abartko on January 17, 2008, 04:28:37 PM
I am trying to build my first desktop and i'm having problems. I'm pretty sure that everything is hooked up correctly but when i plud it in and turn on the psu the only response i get is a very high pitched screeching ultra sonic whistle.  Can anyone help?

hmm, something must not be seated right or something is hooked up incorrectly. double check all connections, check for a proper connection and check that they are plugged into the correct spot. also, reseat your video card, sound card, and RAM.

how do i reset stuff?

That means:
Unplug the component, and re-plug it back in.
The purpose is to be sure that it is plugged in properly.

(If it were me though,  I'd leave the sound card out altogether for now.)

This makes me curioius.
Tell us about how you installed the CPU and heatsink.

Are you familiar with thermal paste?
If no, tell us, and we'll get you a couple links for reading material.

Some things that have not been mentioned:
Is the motherboard mounted in the case?     If so, be sure that the standoffs are in the right places.   No short circuits!

Check the fans.   Are they turning when you power up?
If so,  is the sound coming from a fan?.... perhaps one of them has something in it, or something else wrong with it.
