Hi,
When I try to open MS Office Word 2003, first a 'Windows Installer' window flashes quickly with a message 'preparing to install.....' then finally word opens after some time.
The other office programs; excel, access, etc, don't bring this problem when opened. What is causing this to happen? How do I get rid of the 'Windows Installer' window? My os is Win xp pro.

Hiya
Have you tried a repair?
(control panel > add or remove programs > microsoft office > change > reinstall/repair)
-
neljan's suggestion does not help, see Documents that have attached templates take a long time to open in Word 2002 and in Word 2003 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830561/).

Have you got the same problem then?

Where did this install of Office come from? ?
Have you looged on in IE and Dloaded all the updates for Office ? ?
The installer issue can be addressed but let us know the answers here first so we know what we're dealing with.

I tried to do a repair but it didn't help. Also, at the control panels 'Add/remove programs', I found a software called Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) Do you think this software is the one causing the problem? Maybe I should remove it?

I got a copy of it from a friend's original cd. No, I did not download any updates.

Therein lies the problem...you need to get legit and grab the updates or will continue to have issues.
Open Office is Free and will do most everything Office will do.
