Title: Re-installed XP difficulty transferring files
Post by: scanlas on February 12, 2008, 07:00:33 PM
Hello everyone hop eyou can help.

I just re-installed Windows XP Home and I am in the process of copying over all of my documents (music, images etc....)  I find that if I try copying the files from the DVD+R back onto my hard drive some of the files or the process freezes (not responding) up my pc.  I have been able to transfer some of the files but not all.

Any idea what is causing this?

How are you trying to copy them ? ?
What file system are you using ...FAT32 or NTFS ? ?
Files or folders more than 4G in size will not co-operate...try doing smaller chunks.

my HD is NTFS

I have tried transferring them in smaller chunks as small 20 MB.  some of the files work and some freeze XP up

Out of curiosity, why did you reinstall? If you were getting errors before you might have a hardware problem which is still present. A failing hard drive would exhibit the behavior your describe while trying to transfer files to it.
