I suspect this problem is as much or more a Hotmail issue than an OE issue.  But, since I'm not a user of Hotmail, I can't give specific advise on it.

So, what I'm suggesting, as a test to prove there's really nothing wrong with OE, is to create a Gmail account on Google, then create the POP3 account in OE for your Gmail account and test it.  To get started, see http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13276&topic=12917

Or, wait for help with Hotmail from other forum members.

Well, I'm not suggesting that you stop using Hotmail, although that would be an option, of course.  I was just suggesting trying Gmail as a troubleshooting step, a test to see whether you can receive Gmail with Outlook Express.

So, you already have a Gmail account.  Have you enabled it tor POP mail and set up a Gmail account in Outlook Express?  Does it work?

IMAP, rather than POP, can also be enabled in Gmail and setup in Outlook Express.

Since I haven't used Hotmail, I don't know exactly how it's supposed to work with Outlook Express.  Would that be POP3, IMAP, or still something else, something unique to Hotmail?

You meant Outlook Express, right?  Exactly what was the error?

I see no indication, from Google's About Mail Fetcher (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&ctx=mail&answer=21288) info that indicates you can use Gmail to receive mail from a Hotmail account.  To the contrary, that page says, "the email accounts you’d like to fetch from must support POP access."  Hotmail does not support POP access.  Therefore, you can't use Gmail to receive mail from a Hotmail account.  So, again:
