Post by: myworldforme on February 27, 2008, 05:53:34 PM
I have my mp3 player and I want to password protect it so when I, or anyone else, trys to plug it into a computer, a password has to be inputed to view or open the device. Please help me out. I just want my files to be safe.

So you want to keep your music files stored on your HD protected from someone else being able to steel them via an external device?

No, i mean i want to store my music files on an external HD, one that i can disconnect (my  mp3 player is an example as it is 30gb and i can put any files onto it), and say if someone stole my mp3 player, how do i have it so that person cannot open any files or even look at any files without having to input a password.

You'll need to consult your MP3 players manual to see if it has any security features.

What make/model is your MP3 player?

If someone steals your MP3 player why would it matter ? ?
I think there's more to this story.

That, my friend, is a very very good point.

Perhaps the best inspector Columbo comment I have ever read!

Because of files on it. I never specified I was storing just music files onto it, it was assumed. My mp3 player is basicly an external HD as I said. It plays music, videos, pictures, w/e and it shows up as an external HD on my computer and everyone elses computer. I not only store media files onto it, I also store password files, school project files for backup purposes, saved files for programs, information about my accounts to various websites, anything file that I want. And if someone steals my mp3 player>they get info to all that which>I do not want to happen. You will probably say "well then don't store that info on ur mp3 player", and I would say that I feel safer storing that info so that I can remember it on that instead of writing it down where I can lose it, or keeping it on this computer which can be hacked.

Why I 'assumed' it was for music.

You'll need to consult your MP3 players manual to see if it has any security features.

Well, did you?

Unanswered.

This could take a long time if we just dance around the problem...

The model is made by kaser corp (www.kasercorp.com) and its called a minimambo and from wat i read, it doesnt say anything about it. Sorry it took me awhile, its an old mp3 player, about 2 years as of this summer and not a common one so I had trouble remembering the name, as it didnt say in the booklet

Grrrr... I couldn't find the manual anywhere online  :(

But I have an idea...

What about if you encrypted your important files then transfered them to the device? That way, heaven forbid, if you lost your MP3 player the files would be useless because anyone wishing to be nosey would need to know the password you used to encrypt the files.

Drawback is, you wouldn't be able to use the files within the device - ie an encrypted MP3 will obviously not play, but you've already said that it's not your MP3's that are of concern.

Another setback is that to access the encrypted files 'on the go' as it were, you would need to transfer them to a computer then decrypt them using the same software you used to encrypt them. If the computer doesn't have the software installed, you'd need to install it (duh).

But, you could also store the encryption program on the device couldn't you - for emergencies. Like if your out and about on a mission & you need to access your top-secret files in a James Bond emergency style; you could hook up to a computer (with the USB lead you carry around with you  :)) transfer the program > install > transfer the file > decrypt > save the world.

Or zip them up into a folder using WinZip and password protect the folder...
Again you will need a machine that has WinZip installed to use the files.

Great, thanks, and I found a pretty good program so far. TrueCrypt. And it has this portable feature where it instals the program onto ur device? I don't know how it works but I can just use the program from my mp3 player without isntaling onto the computer. Thanks
