Title: Help needed -- you All here are awesome, by the way...
Post by: Linda Loups on March 07, 2008, 12:06:27 PM
Been a great help to me in the past!

Okay, enough sucking up  :D

I *hope* you can help...it seems a tough one.

Firstly, though, I am completely computer illiterate -- a computer dope. So keep that in mind and be gentle with me  :D Seriously, though. I need stuff spelled out for me in simpleton terms. Thanks  ;)

Okay, I started my own free forum.
Have gotten a lot of  help from the hosts, but it seems it's come down to a problem with my computer.

I have the XP; using Mozilla.

My control panel as the site "owner" is showing a page with missing controls. So, for example, what I see is a page with no place to enter an avatar; yet, the host administrator went in and -- with the Mozilla browser -- and has an entirely different page. They even posted a screen shot of it. So I was told there must be a "glitch" in my computer that is preventing me from seeing what is there.
Page I see, is a totally different one.

I did a cleaner type thing which seemed to have cleared out all my history and cookies -- whatever all stuff is...so I really don't know the next step.

Any suggestions? I know this is a long shot to ask, but any??

Or any more info you need?

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

No, but I don't really want to. I don't like it. I prefer firefox.
Like I wrote, the hosts used firefox, my version of it, and were able to get the proper control screen. Mine just showed as a regular member's screen.

Does that make sense?

Oh now I get why you didn't respond the first time...

I only suggested IE to determine whether it was a browser issue (try it just to see if it is)

So you're logging on with some kind of administrator account for a forum? & the host is doing the same only they can see the control panel that you can't? but it may be that they have a different control panel to you as they are a host? they're obviously not logging in using your username/password are they? (sorry, I don't know about that kind of thing).

Did the person say that what they see is exactly what you should see?

Any screenshots available? one of his & one of yours would be helpful, you can use Screenhunter (http://wisdom-soft.com/products/screenhunter.htm) (free version) to capture yours.

Post screenshots here

Yes, I am the "Owner" of the site and so have certain controls to set and run the thing. The host site, went in to see what my problem. They asked what browser and which version I used  and what kind of computer. So they went in with that one and were able to see everything okay. So that is why they determined it was a glitch in my computer settings/or something that is causing the issue. They even took a screenshot of my page! In other words, it was a screen shot of my site's "Owner's" control panel -- had my name and info on it.
What I see is not even a regular member's control panel! It is missing many of the basic links...
like the avatar example I gave.

So, I'm assuming it's not Firefox per se...because it can be seen.

So, yes, they went into my control panel.

I'm wondering if anyone here has an idea of what may be preventing me from seeing it...

I did one of those cleaner-type things that wipes out histories, and cookies -- whatever that stuff is...and I still can't see it. But it's there! :(

What on my computer settings would cause this type of blocking or..??

How did you clean cookies? was it through control panel > internet options or from within Firefox?

Download CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) & use it to clean all temporary internet files/cookies

(guide here (http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,22078.0.html))

Do you have any problems viewing graphics on any other sites?

How is your security?

neljan,

That's the cleaner I used!

Not other probs viewing graphics.

Don't know about security. That would have something to do with seeing my page?

patio, I don't know what program. If you mean what host site, it's Aimoo.

Thanks!

Not in your case, not if you have no problems viewing content from other sites.

Do you see anything instead of what you are supposed to see, like a box with a red x inside it?

Is it just missing words/links?

Ask then to reset the Admin Controls with a new password etc....

Neljan, no. No dead links either. I'm pretty sure it's the page of a regular member. I don't see the page an owner or admin should have.

Yes, it's missing the options entirely.   :-\

patio, they did not seem to feel the need to do that; so I don't know if it would help. They've been very helpful and have tried several things. I will make the suggestion, though. Since they used my version of firefox, went into my control panel, saw it there, I think they are correct that it's some glitch or setting on my computer.

This should be a relatively easy thing for them to do...and they probably should have tried it first off....
What Extensions do you have installed in FireFox ? ?
And double check the version # please.   Help/About FireFox.

Let me clarify: I do not know if they did try to reset the admin controls; however, if it would have required them giving me a new password, then, no, I did not get one; so, whatever that means, if anything...

Firefox/2.0.0.12 -- is that what you want to know?

Do not know where to find extensions...

OK.
BTW if you didn't recieve a new password they have not reset the Admin controls ...

I suggested it (reset the Admin controls)  to them.

Any other ideas as to what I can do on my computer ? I tend to think that's what it is. I have ZERO knowledge (obviously) how to set ANYthing on it, so I imagine it's something very simple.

So, you can login to your forum, same as a regular member, and you can also login to the admin panel.  Is that correct?

Edit: What forum software is this?  phpBB, or what?

I can log in as the Owner.
I can also log in under a different name as an admin.
I can also log in under as a regular member under another name.

So, I have more than one identity. I did this to see what I'd get with each, as well as to test the board functions

It's Aimoo...not sure if it's PhpBB...

Here is the main site page http://www.aimoo.com/default.html

Just so our viewers aren't confused, this is a response to a PM I sent her.  And, she's referring to being logged out of ComputerHope forum after some time.

I'll be away from my computer for awhile.  Will check back later to catch up with the discussion here.

I created a test forum using aimoo.  The avatar option was quickly found on the Profile screen.  Did you look there?

soybean, thanks for doing all that! But I've explained that I know it's there I just cannot see it. It is omething on MY computer.

I don't know how else to explain this.

Thanks to you all anyway :)

Try accessing it on another computer.  Then, let us know whether found the option in the profile settings to add an avatar.

And, can you post a screen shot of what you see?   And, state EXACTLY, STEP-BY-STEP, how you trying to access the profile options.  What URL are you going to, to log into your forum account?  Then, what link or button do you click on?  Then, what next, etc.? Without precise details here, I doubt any progress can be realized.

I wonder if this may be a flash issue setting on her FireFox
take a peek at tools and then Options in Firefox. Then look under Content.

Are the little boxes checked for Java? and how about Pop Ups...

soybean, I don't have access to another computer.  And I wouldn't know how to do one of those still shots.    :-\

Hi, Doug :)

All are checked:

Block pop-up windows
Load images automatically
Enable javascript
Enable Java

What should or shouldn't be?

Thanks.

Also, I recently did these, plus that cleaner thingy:

uninstall:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157
reinstall:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

and I deleted cookies/cleared temp cache

Any other suggestions?

Lets try starting your firefox in safemode:  You can do this by clicking on start / Run and type in
firefox -safe-mode
press enter.... then navigate to your site and log in and see what happens.

Follow these instructions I found.

Starting Safe Mode
To enter Safe Mode you must first make sure Firefox or Thunderbird is not running in the background. This includes all windows like the Download Manager and Extensions that open in a separate window.

[edit]Windows
This should not be confused with restarting the computer in Windows Safe Mode!

Use the "Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)", "Mozilla Thunderbird (Safe Mode)", or "Mozilla Thunderbird (No Extensions)" shortcut in the Mozilla Firefox or Mozilla Thunderbird program folder on the Windows Start Menu. If this shortcut is missing, you can start in Safe Mode by selecting "Start -> Run" (on Windows Vista, use "Start Search" or enable the Run box, as described here) and entering,

For Firefox, one of these:

firefox -safe-mode
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode
For Thunderbird, one of these:

thunderbird -safe-mode
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -safe-mode

Hi, Doug, I appreciate you following up  :)

Did the safe mode thing and no change :(

By the way, should I change it back?
