I want to share files between my 2 computers in my wireless network. So far i have set the folder i want to share, shared on network, allowed file and printer sharing an exception to windows firewall, and have the same workgroup name. But i still cant view the other computer's files. Like when i go to My Network Places, my other computer doesn't show up, only mine. Is there some free software to share the files to save me the trouble of figuring all this out? What should i do to share files over my wireless network? Thanks :)

Your router may have some firewall settings that need to change also. Are the two computers using Windows XP?

It would be best to get file sharing working with wired connections before going wireless to eliminate the wireless configuration as the problem. But I guess you can always fall back to that if problem continues.
You don't need alternative software, you need to get yours working.
Operating System. What operating system(s) are you using?
Configuration. What is your network configuration? Do you just have the two computers trying to speak with each other directly using an "ad-hoc" wireless connection or are you using a wireless router to connect them?
Ping. From a command window at each computer see if you can ping the other one using its IP address. For example: >ping 192.168.1.2. If the computers cannot successfully ping each other, you do not have connectivity, and will not be able to communicate.
Show Shares. If the computers can ping each other, use the Run dialog window off the Start menu to see if you can access the shares of the other computer. For example enter "\\ip_address" in the text entry box of run dialog window and hit enter.

I have two computers. One is connected to a modem, which is connected to the wireless router. This computer doesn't use wireless internet. My other computer is wireless, since it connects to my wireless router.
I tried the Ping thing and it worked out, like transfered or whatever. Uh, yeah so i just typed the ip adress into the run box and it connected me to my other computer. :) Good, so i should share files by connecting this way?

1st you need to network the two computers. make sure you can ping both computer (vice versa) then enable the file and printer sharing on the each computers.

I tried to ping the non-wireless computer and it didn't work. A message popped up saying unknown path. In the command prompt, it kept saying "request timed out." I know i have the right IP, so i don't think its just a careless error. And i am using Windows Xp...

disable the firewall.
what is the IP address of your two computers?

I disabled the firewall which didn't change anything.
192.168.0.101 - wireless pc
192.168.254.2 - other pc

your two computer has two unique IP address and that is the reason why you cannot share the file.
your computer should have an IP address that is in range like PC1 should have 192.168.0.101 and PC2 should have an IP of 192.168.0.102 and make sure the file sharing is enabled.

Do you have a router? if you do just connect both your computer to the router and the router will provide an IP address on your two PC's.

Yes i have a router. Both computers are connected to the router, one by wireless, and the other by wired connection from to the modem, to the router. But how will this give me a new ip?
