Title: If I had to choose between CPU's, which?
Post by: Fordtruckmaniac on March 13, 2008, 01:28:23 AM
I have a question.

If I had to choose between these two different CPU's, which would be the best bang for the buck?

AMD Athlon 64 3400, 2.2GHz, socket 754;

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD-Athlon%2064%203400+%20-%20ADA3400AEP5AP%20(ADA3400BOX).html

Or a Intel Pentium 4, Prescott, 3.4GHz, socket 775;

http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL7Z7.html

I have read where AMD's Athlon 64's, though they show a slower frequency speed, are as fast or faster than the Pentium 4's in certain instances.

Thanks

Both are around the same, performance wise.
However, I'd choose the Athlon, as they tend to run cooler.

mine is oc'ed and idle it stays cool(around 39c) athlon 3500 2.2->2.4ghz

I would go with the intel since that most games are made to run with that type of cpu.

what are you talking about?

pc game specs

The minimum system requirements for many games usually do refer to Intel P4 or equivalent, yes (e.g. Intel Pentium 4 2GHz).
That's a reference point though, used because Intel CPUs tend to be more common than AMD ones.
Games are optimized for different CPUs, true, but the optimizations run both ways - games aren't made to run on Intel CPUs and not AMD.

really its the cpu's cache space and the speed it runs that make the difference.

exactly :)

Where did Fordtruckmaniac say anything about games?    ::)

Thats why I listed the specs from cpu-world.

So a person with more knowledge than me, could compare.

So they are pretty much equal, performance wise?

I'm not a gamer, just wanting to make some improvements. I already have a couple 754 boards, that will take up to the 3700 Athlon 64.

Fairly equal, yes.  Each will be slightly better in different applications, but overall, very similar.

The S754 3700 is pretty rare, I'm finding them pretty expensive here too.  What's your current specs?

Actually right now I'm running a Biostar U8668-D, socket 478 board with a SL6PG Pentium 4 3.06, 533MHz bus speed/512KB L2 cache size, with a 1GB of PC2700 Kingston memory.

well thats WAY bttr than mine  but i still would consider an upgrade on ur CPU, perhaps a Pentium D or Core 2 Dou proccesor those are top-of-the-line proccessors i highly reccommend them.

well, it all depends on what you are going to do with the computer

I have a DVD burner, CD burner, that are used quite a bit.

Net browsing, Google Earth, a little game playing, and I mean only a little.

Considering that then I would go with the AMD

Just for the sake of asking, not being argumentative.

Why?

AMD is well known in Graphics Proccessing and since u do Google Earth u'll need an upgrade.

This is balderdash at best... the CPU's are so close in specs i would make a financial decision at this point.

Which Pentium 4 CPU are you looking at getting?
If it's socket 478 remember you won't need to change your board, whereas the AMD will require a board change too.
Also, you may want to consider a graphics card if you don't currently have a dedicated one, it would help with your games and Google Earth.

I was looking at a socket 775, 3.4GHz Prescott, SL7Z7 Pentium 4. 800MHz bus speed/2048KB L2 cache size for their bus speed and cache size improvement over my socket 478, P4, 3.06 mentioed above. I will have to purchase a 775 board though. But thats OK. The Pentium 4's seem to be easier to come up with, without having to take out a loan. :)

I do already have a socket 754, AMD Athlon 64, Venice core, L2 cache 512KB/ HyperTransport, with speeds up to 800 MHz
(ADA3200AIO4BX) on a Biostar board with a GB of memory on it too. This is what I was looking to go up the 1KB cache size with the ADA3400AEP5AP Clawhammer core processor.

And I have a bare PC Chips 754 board as well, they ( the Biostar and PC Chips) both will max with the AMD3700.

I do run a Nvidia FX6200 256MB VGA card on my 478 board.

from personal experience i would say earlier Intel would be better than the earlier AMD.
but i would suggest going to a AMD Athlon 64 X2 2GHz or higher if you want bang for the buck and if you go AM2 socket those motherboards are rather inexpensive.

I think in that case that you'll see a better performance increase with the P4 than the AMD, as you're increasing the bus speed, clock speed and cache size compared to your older P4, whereas upgrading the Athlon will mean a slightly higher clock speed and a small cache increase.
775 boards are relatively inexpensive, and many will offer the upgrade path to Intel's newer CPUs too, without necessarily requiring new RAM.

I understand, I have seen some Intel socket 775 boards that have 1600/1333/1066/800 MHz FSB.   :o

Thanks,
