Title: Worthless Antivirus Software?
Post by: PC_Illiterate on January 29, 2005, 07:34:49 AM
I updated my Norton Antivirus software to the Norton Antivirus with Internet Protection 2005 and my computer has never run so slow nor have I ever had as many problems with pop ups and trash on my computer since.  What is going on, did I make a mistake by uploading this update?  Not only that but when I do perform a scan ~90% of the time the message comes back that the software cannot access the file and cannot delete the file, so what good is the software?  Someone please enlighten me, I'm about to throw my computer out the window!!!! >:(

I know how you feel! I've ALMOST done that to my computer too! But, that's besides the point... Mind telling me which operating system you are using, how much capacity your hard disk has, and how much RAM you have?

Flame,
I am running the Windows XP operating system
I have 11 GB of a 20 GB hard drive available
I have 256 K or RAM loaded but I am having issues determining the amount available.

Have any tips for locating the RAM?

In fact, there is... Click Start -> Run ... In the Run box, type dxdiag   ... When you do this you might see a small dialog box pop-up... Just click no on that. Next, a large gray box will display... Look inside for the RAM...

When you bought the new software, did you check to see if it would be compatible? You might be having a compatibility problem...

No I did not only because when I bought the computer it came with Norton Antivirus so (like a fool) I ASSUMED the upgrade would also be compatible.  Is this not safe to assume and how do I go about checking the compatibility?

Well... Just to "assume" something, just gets you into trouble eventually... In order for you to check the compatibility, you have to look on the bottom of the box that the software came in. It will say what the requirements are... All you have to do is know what you meet those requirements, or top them...

I upgraded this software online from the symantic software website so there is no box to check.

That's not good.... Can you contact Symantec Technical Support? They might be able to fix this problem...

yes in fact I just recieved a warning that the antivirus software could not scan my computer because the liscence has been corrupted so I will have to uninstall and reinstall the software.

Thats the other complaint I have with Norton Antivirus, the only way to get support is either email and wait or pay so much per attempt to correct.  the support is not included in the package.  I will never use this software again once my liscence is up.

Thanks for the help maybe one day I can return the favor.

See Ya

PC_Illiterate......first , if you purchased a new pc and it had a software bundle included in the purchase price it possibly did have Norton Anti virus included ......BUT those versions on Norton are usually only good for 90 days ( I believe ) ......So had your 90 day version expired? ........Next , if it hadn't , was it upgradeable to
Norton Antivirus with Internet Protection 2005 ? Next , are you saying that Norton sold you a upgrade on - line and then refuse to provide you with support .....( thats really odd .....) If you were seeking other than on-line support ....ie telephone ....for the free version that came installed ........Norton doesnt provide phone support unless you pay for it ( I'm sure you can understand that ). I have had occassion to use Nortons support ,
on-line and phone support .....and I found them to be more than supportive ..........Once they understand that the issue may have been caused by their software ....there will be no charge ............ Don't be too
critical of Norton ......They do have a very good Product .......and it works very well .....You should try phoning Microsoft if you have a OEM version of their software ....there is no phone support unless you pay ......

Perhaps you could get back to us with answers to my questions

Spot on.

I'll tell you now though that I hate Norton myself. My parents had that and Zonealarm installed before I even got this PC, and I always landed up getting into trouble when I disabled both to surf the net.

Not ideal, but seeing as the PC was working at an almost unusable speed...

Corrosive....We'll have to wait for response to my questions ......It's possible that somehow his pc has become infected with something ...possibly a trojan and or a virus or some other malicious pest and it rendered his trial  Norton unuseable ......and when the software he bought on-line tried to do the pre install scan it saw the expired subscription date and refused to go any further because it wouldn't be eligible for a update .......But this is only speculation .......

:)  I agree that Norton is useless, I used it for a year, or so and it cause me more greif than it was worth.  So when it came time to renue, I dumped it and installed a free antivirus program.  AVG.  Have had no problems with it for over a year now.  AVG is free, it works.

To all,
I have had this computer ~ 2yrs now and I subscribed to the Norton Antivirus when the 90 day free subscription was up and when it came time to renew Norton gave me the choice of maintaining the current software or upgrading so I spent ~ $70 on the software upgrade and have had nothing but issues since.  I did say that the anti virus had found infections on this unit but is unable to access the files or delete them, so again I ask, If the antivirus software cannot rid me of the infections what good is it?  Maybe one of you can suggest a way to delete the files?  I came to this forum for help.
