i think it worked. is there a way i can double check. it seems like no matter how many times and different ways i delete it somehow it still pops up somewhere.
if i go into control panel, add/remove programs then add/remove windows components windows messenger is still listed in there. does this mean it is still installed?

Hmm, now windows messenger is part of the issue, too?  Yes, if it's in Add or Remove Programs, that indicates it's still installed.  Did you try uninstalling it via Add/Remove Windows Components?  What happened?

it was never listed in add/remove programs so i could not do an official uninstall. i knewit was there because it was listed on the desktop toolbar

it was never listed in add/remove programs ...
And, what is "it"?  Yahoo Messenger?  Windows Messenger?  What?

WELL AT THE TIME I DIDNT KNOW THERE WAS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO. I HAD ASSUMED IT WAS YAHOO MESSENGER BECAUSE OF THE ICON (IT LOOKED LIKE THE YAHOO MESSENGER ICON) NEITHER ONE OF THOSE WERE EVER LISTED IN THE ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS

No reason to holler.

We like to get it right when assisting with problems...that's why we're here.
In that process details become important and are sometimes lacking.
It's one of the reasons we wind up asking so many questions but don't interpret it the wrong way.

And yes they are 2 different programs and the removal is different for both.
Personally anything by Yahoo is about as easy to get rid of as say a Norton product so as i said we like to get it right.

P.S. Not all programs installed will always be listed in Add/Remove just so you know.

patio.

Windows Messenger does not appear in Add or Remove Programs.  But, it is installed or removed by opening the Add or Remove Programs panel, then clicking on Add/Remove Windows Components on the left side of the Add or Remove Programs panel.

Yahoo! Messenger, on the other hand, should appear in the list of programs in Add or Remove Programs if you have it properly installed.  Of course, it would also appear on your Programs menu, the list of programs you see when you go to Start, All Programs.  And, you'd probably have an shortcut icon for it on your desktop.

And, of course, if you start either Windows Messenger or Yahoo! Messenger, the panel that opens will have it's name at the top of the panel/window.  So, you should really have no difficulty figuring out what messaging program(s) you have installed.

Another factor here is that Windows Messenger can be installed from within Windows, while Yahoo! Messenger must be downloaded, unless it was pre-installed on your computer when you bought it.

Oh sorry sorry i wasnt meaning to yell at anyone just had caps on from my password...

yes it did come preinstalled with windows. i did  at one point go into add/remove programs windows conponents..i unchecked everything except the windows messenger and it did nothing to the windows messenger but instead it took away my internet explorer desktop icon.
when i go into the add/remove windows compontent now windows messenger is still isted in there, does this mean it is still installed?

Yes, you did the opposite of what you should have done in Add/Remove Windows Components.  This does not actually uninstall IE, but makes it appear to be uninstalled, since it gets removed from the Programs menu, from desktop shortcuts, etc.

so i should check everything except windows messenger instead of unchecking everything except that

Yes, that's right, but maybe not "everything".  There may be other items there that you never use.  So, you can leave them unchecked also.
