Title: Norton 2008-Computer slow
Post by: air on April 17, 2008, 12:39:05 AM
Hi,

I have downloaded norton 2008, but now the computer is very slow. I am using win xp, 1.5 g micropr, 512 ram, about 16 g free memory in c: and 70 g total.

I have defram, disk clean up, but nothing new.

It appears like the computer is always running, as if the mprocessor is always working.

What do I have to do?

Thank you.

Get another 512MB of RAM, to start with.

Norton does its job fine in terms of detecting and updating but it's TOO RESOURCE heavy.

So remove the norton and get the avg or the avast depending on what you prefer. Just google either "avg" or "avast" and visit the first link google gets you.

They both use much less resource, and have automated updating and realtime scanning. The programs always are improving in terms of the detection rates and freeware version is good enough for those programs.

Is your computer faster with extra RAM?

Hi Broni,

I have just update + 512 mb. Now, i have 1 gb.

Yes, it is faster, but appears to freeze quickly, when I run few things.

I might add 1 gb more. What do you think?

I also gave a look to avg and avast. How is their free antivirus program? It will take care of viruses. How about other threats?

Thank you.

XP with 1GB of RAM should run perfectly fine, however Norton may be a culprit. I hate that thing. Did you pay for it, or is it a trial?

I just bought it. What do you think about avg or avast?

Thank you.

If you bought it, there is a problem, because you don't want to waste your money.
AVG, and Avast! are excellent programs, and free ones.
If you have Norton CD, we can try to uninstall it (don't do anything, yet!), and see, if your computer behaves better.

I bought  it from symantec website. No disk. I will check with them.

Avg/avast are antivirus programs. How about other threats like spyware?

Thank you.
