Okay I've defragged my brother's hdd lastnight and just now and I analyzed it again and it still says that I need to defrag it should I back up his data or defrag it again
-
Backing up anything important should have happened BEFORE making any changes to the drive (like defragmentation).
-
okay I have another question the hdd seems to labor alot when load programs or even surfing the net. my brother only has 128mb of ram in his computer
-
Ok, think I better ask for this...
Need the full specs of the system, including the Windows version and all hardware (especially drives, sizes of the drives, and partitions)
-
dell 2300 1.8gig cpu 40gig hdd and 128mb of ram

it's windows xp sp 2 2002
-
sorry win xp home sp2 2002

Ok, after backing up anything important, give it another shot.

128MB of RAM for XP is ridiculous number. He needs more RAM, 512MB, or preferably, 1GB.
How much of that 40GB hard drive is free space?
-
I know. the hdd has 21 gigs left or 56% left
-
He still has insufficient RAM problem.
As for defrag, try what I use: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/

that's what I thought too he was asking why the hdd was working so hard and I told him that he needed memory. I also cleaned up internet files got rid of spyware and cookies and like I said I defragged his hdd 3 times still pretty much the same result fragments everywhere.

With the price of RAM where it is right now there's no excuse not to throw another 512M stick in there...both the machine and your Brother will be much happier...
