1.  Computer Hardware:
     a.  Amount of RAM installed (system memory in MegaBytes or GigaBytes)?
     b.  Does it have a bootable floppy disk drive or CD-ROM drive?

2.  Operating System.  What operating system and service pack level are you using?  Did the operating system come pre-installed with your system?

If you installed your own operating system; what distribution media did you use; Official Microsoft retail CD, OEM, something else?

3.  What hardware and/or software changes did you make, if any, before the problem arose?  Had the hard drive been replaced in the not too distant past?

4.  HP Support for Compaq Evo n400c Notebook PC (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=96314&lang=en&cc=us)

find the cover which hides your hard disk on the bottom of your notebook. make sure the drive is installed properly. also make sure all of the pins are not bent
