Well, I tried to update IE a few weeks ago and ever since I am unable to open IE!! When I try to reinstall IE, it says I already have IE. There are certain websites I can't access with AOL but in the past I could with IE. In addition, when I go to these websites it says to try an alternate such as Mozilla, but when I tried to download that it wouldn't go through. ANY help is appreciated
-
Windows version, IE version? What computer are you posting from?
-
Did you try to search for "internet explorer" under the search option in the Start menu?
-
Did search-When I try to open IE, I get this message:" The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.
To attempt fixing network connectivity problems, click Tools, and then click "Diagnose Connection Problems..."
Other options to try:
Click the Refresh button, or try again later.
If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.
To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Windows version, IE version? What computer are you posting from?
-
DELL
WINDOWS XP
IE 7
thanks!
-
What computer are you posting from?
...since you can't open IE...
-
The Dell;
Here's the story-in order to listen to music from Pandora .com or order magazines from certain websites, you can't use AOL. I used to be able to click ont the IE symbol on my scree, and go to those websites. When I try to use IE as an alternate, I get the message I posted which I've tried to follow in the past with no success. One fellow gave me a long list of remedies but it failed at the end with an error 193 message which no one has yet been able to explain
-
The Dell;
What browser, then...?
-
aol
-
Once you're signed onto AOL, have you tried to open a separate browser?
-
yes-and then the error message appears:
The page cannot be displayed

My apologies. You did explain that. I was trying to remember my days of using AOL dialup, and I don't think i had any trouble using my own browser back then...
I'm sure I was using internet explorer. I'm sorry I'm not being much help.
-
Keep AOL connection up. Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, click on Internet Explorer(no add-ons). Will it open web pages?
-
will try tomorrow and report-thanks!
-
8 AM, sharp!
....
...just kidding :)
-
Tried but Internet Explorer is NOT listed under system tools!
-
Very strange...
Go Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>Advanced tab, and click on "Reset" button.
Restart computer.
Will IE open?
-
no, got same message I previously posted
-
Is this AOL dial-up?
-
no, cable
-
Do you have SP3 installed, or not yet?
-
don't know what it is, sorry
-
Hold Windows key, and hit Pause/Break. What Service Pack is listed?
-
2
-
Uninstall IE7 through Add\Remove. It'll go back to IE6. See, if IE6 works.
-
you won't believe this one-NO IE is listed at all when I hit add/remove list!
-
Yeah, I was suspicious, when it wasn't listed under System Tools.
How do you know, it's version 7?
-
My son-my computer savior before he moved, told me. He tried to fix the mess and gave up
He said he was sure I'd screw things up any time I'd try to "improve" things-
-
Search your computer for iexplore.exe
Report back on findings.
-
I will and I truly appreciate the time you have given me
-
Did search-15 items came up but how do I paste this here-I tried and it doesn't work-I AM lost, sorry
-
If you don't have any screen capture utility installed, get free Gadwin PrintScreen: http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/
-
I'm really sorry-I downloaded the program you just suggested but have no idea what to do with it now so I can post the results of the search

Yeah, something is wrong here, because my iexplore.exe file in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer has 611KB, yours, 91KB.
Try this:
1. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then press Enter.
2. Find the Ie.inf file that is located in Windows\Inf folder.
3. Right-click the Ie.inf file, and then click Install.
4. Restart the computer when the file copy process is complete.
Also, give me another screenshot, but do this:
so I can see whole width of "In Folder" column
-
It says:
FILES NEEDED
The file 'IEXPLORE.EXE' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD is needed
Type the path where the file is located and then click ok
Copy files from C:\WINDOWS\in\i386
(I try clicking and nothing happens)
-
Please, proceed to second thing, I asked you to do for me....screenshot.
-
Trouble understanding--my son helped me with first screenshot--I'll ask him to help again soon
-
OK.
I can see correct iexplore.exe sizes here:
611KB, but I can't read a full path, because "In Folder" column in your screenshot is truncated.
Run search again, and write down full path, which starts with "C:\Windows\SoftwareDitribut...."
Then, try this again:
1. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then press Enter.
2. Find the Ie.inf file that is located in Windows\Inf folder.
3. Right-click the Ie.inf file, and then click Install.
4. Restart the computer when the file copy process is complete.
When you approach this message:
FILES NEEDED
The file 'IEXPLORE.EXE' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD is needed
Type the path where the file is located and then click ok
Copy files from C:\WINDOWS\in\i386
replace C:\WINDOWS\in\i386 with the path, you just wrote down.
