i recently changed the video resolution on my computer and now the screen is blank even though the computer is on and working in the background
-
start in Safe mode and change your resolution back to a setting known to work. Then, you can restart in normal mode and experiment with resolution settings. If the same problem occurs again, go back to Safe mode and reset again.

And, you did start in Safe mode, right? You know how to start in Safe mode? Please explain the technique so we know you know how to do it.

but the problem is that the computer screen is completely dark.
One more thing: Do you see the windows Logo (with the scrolling bar)?

what type of cable are you using...VGA,DVI?
I know in DVI it will not show you the boot up so you cannot even selct safe mode. If this is the case you need to connect an S video cable or VGA so you can see boot sequence; enter safe mode on boot up by hitting F8.
