Title: Comp wont recognize hard drive
Post by: danielsan1969 on August 11, 2008, 02:55:58 AM
Ok my fiances main hard drive is screwed so we moved everything of importance to her secondary drive. So I took that drive out and put it in my computer and it is set to slave. I start up my comp and right click on my computer and go too manage, and it is showing the drive but not as an active drive. and when I right click it it only gives me the option to make it a basic disk or something I choose that but it tells me that it will erase all data on it which is not what I want too do. I just want to transfer the data too my comp and then use it too install windows on her comp. Is there a step i'm missing? We really don't have the money to buy another hard drive.

You might need a second opinion here but I think the drive has become corrupt.

What happens when you Right Click it and go to Properties?

Also, what Operating Systems are on these drives?

Sorry I'm using windows xp and I'm almost positive the drive is good since I have only had it a short while and it was only used for storage. and before her main drive went kaput it was working just fine as for what it says under properties I need to hook it up real quick and check. I'll post when I have done that.

I would first try to see if this drive works on another computer (if possible)

Then I would try to reinstall the drivers for the device.

However, we have to prepare for the worst....  :-\

I don't know but it was running really slow and there were too many problems on it so I decided to reinstall windows on it so I reformatted it and then tried to install windows and then it kept getting shut down saying there is something wrong with the hard drive. So I hooked it up to my comp and ran a scan and the program I used said there was an error on the drive so here I am trying to get the other drive clean so I can use it to put windows on it.

How did you format it?

Not to be rude but I already know what is wrong with the other drive the one I am asking about has already been formatted and has data on it I just want to get the data off it. It seems if you look at my screenshots it will let me to convert it to a basic disk but that is not what I want. When I formatted the drive that I know is damaged I took out the other drive and formatted it alone. So really what I'm getting at is why do you want to know about my damaged drive? all I really know is it was formatted NTFS and when I first formatted the drive I am asking about that too was also formatted NTFS.

Wait, so we're trying to get the data off the drive you circled in your picture, right?

If you formatted the drive, then you have pretty much erased all the data.
