Title: Distorted speaker voice, please help! (Realtek high def Audio)
Post by: digitman on August 19, 2008, 09:05:34 AM
Hi,

I'm running a NEC Versa S3200 laptop purchased just 3 months ago, running Windows XP. Everything was fine until a few days ago I noticed that my laptop's speaker slot is kind of loose, and if I insert the headset's port, every little movement causes the port to loosen up a bit and I have to fix it to hear properly.

The next day or so suddenly all voices became very very distorted. If I play at very low volume I can hear correctly, but as the volume goes up the voice gets REALLY distorted and crappy.

I've tried both the headset and some earplugs, this happens on both of them. If I don't use anything and try the laptop's built in speakers, no voice comes out.

I've tried doing system restore and uninstalling/re-installing the audio drivers but they didn't fix it. If I change the 'Karoeko' setting to 0 its just like hearing on a very low volume, which works mostly ok except I often can't make out what is being said.

To top it off I've lost my laptop's serial number, the sticker is nowhere to be found on the back of the laptop so I can't use the warranty.  :-[

If anyone can assist with this it'll be greatly appreciated.

Well first I think we should know what happened before the problem started?
Any recent downloads, installs, hardware changes, ect....?

Nothing other than the usual things I do every day. I did try to install Trend Micro security suite but it caused some programs on my comp. to not run, so i uninstalled it. After that it still worked for a day or two before the voice got distorted. Also doing a system restore to the day before I installed trend micro didn't fix the problem.

Thanks for the response.

I'm not sure but I suggest posting a HijackThis log here.
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis

Perhaps it may lead to something (and it's a TrendMicro Utility)

Now it is up to the Malware Specialists here in ComputerHope to have a look at the HijackThis log.

In the mean time, you mentioned you had some sound software? 'Karoeko'?
I would think about either uninstalling it and see if the problem remains or reinstalling it.

That's actually just an audio setting for my soundboard (brought up if I click the sound icon in system tray). I saw it mentioned in a thread when I searched the forums.

Thanks for your help. I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone can assist with this.

Looks OK but there are a few things you should do.

You have Viewpoint installed.

Viewpoint Media Player/Manager/Toolbar is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

More information: It is suggested to remove the program now.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present..
----------

Your Java is out of date.

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system.

Download JavaRa (http://prm753.bchea.org/click/click.php?id=9) to your Desktop and unzip it to its own folder.

.
----------

Use the  Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector) to check for out of date software.
