Title: Having problems all over the place!
Post by: alltogethercrazy on August 23, 2008, 01:45:28 AM
In the last 2 weeks, I have been having problems with my PC-

1) I cannot download anything
Response is that either it needs Windows Service pak (or) it Cannot perform this operation.. As far as I can see in add or remove programs, its there.
OR- It downloads but then I either cant find it or it wont open.

When I  tried to install a Virus Protection program,  it goes through the process, but then that too wont open.  I continued to do a disk clean up, and delete some things, it doesnt do very much- only 1%

2)Internet Explorer says it cannot display this page ( I chose for it to be my default )

I can jump on to another search engine on the tool bar- some of my tool bar just vanished as well.
and.... my system volume folders show that they are empty, and like I said before, nothing is opeing properly. Other people have to use my account to log on because its saying that the profiles are missing.. There are alot of files that say they are empty as well, and I have not deleted anything.

Everything I try, doesnt work. I want do a system restore, but I cant because of my c drive being so full.

Please any advise!

Before we do anything, what is your Hard Drive Capacity and how much Free Space is there?

The drive is  4.88 GB and free space is 117 MB

Wow. What Windows Version is this?

Windows needs at least 15% free to run properly. That is about 700mb for you.

I suggest you start by following the steps here:

Then, if you still have problems, we will investigate further.

In My Computer, right click the drive and go to Properties.

I clicked on your link, and read your suggestions, but I have tried all of those before.

I cannot do a system restore- I dont have enough room.
and I have done the defragmenting- plus deleted as much as I could. .

Is there a way that I can transfer from the c to another drive?

Have you tried the steps for CCleaner?

If you mean have Windows installed on the other drive? I think you will need to reinstall Windows.

Now as for your problem, do you remember what you did last time to fix it?

This is the first time that I have experienced this. I tried everything that I know that has possibly worked before.
I used a cleaner before, but only when I had a slow computer.
Will I be able to install one with these issues?  I was thinking that if I could get some room on my drive, I could rectify most of this.

Try moving all your media (photos and videos ect...) to your other drives. Keep as much free space as you can on C Drive (where Windows is installed)

Did that- I moved them along time ago, when I was being notified that I was running out of room on the c- but for some reason, even though I am not putting anything on it, I am still filling up it up.  How? I am completely confused.  There must have been something that I did, or could it be a virus?
When I download music, etc I put them  in F..

Under CCleaner, put a tick in the check boxes Internet Explorer Temporary Files, System Temporary Files and (if you have it) Mozilla Firefox Internet Cache.
Also tick Empty Recycling Bin.

Run the cleaner and see how much you remove.

As for your additional problem, you may want to look here if you suspect a virus:

I dont have the cleaner anymore, I uninstalled it.  Should I just install another? Is that what you meant?

Is the local drive usually that small? What exactly is the purpose of NTFS ?

I appreciate your help- ;)

No problem.

NTFS is the filesystem or Drive Format that Windows runs on. You will notice that other hard drives are also usually NTFS and Flash Drives are either FAT or FAT32.

And yes, I suggest you reinstall CCleaner but install it on another partition (like Drive D or something).

Should I just reinstall windows and start over? (ON C) and how do you do something like that and have your computer funtion to do so?

I will reinstall a cleaner..
I saw a free down load to fix windows xp, 2000 etc..  and it also is a cleaner. What would you recomend?

What do you mean?

CCleaner here:
http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,57879.0.html

Also, I wouldn't reinstall Windows unless you are really desperate, however I don't see what that would accomplish.

As for your Internet problems, how are you connected? Is this a laptop or Desktop?

So....Did you get CCleaner working?

I can't think of anything else that would cause your internet/download problems so I think you should take me up on that other suggestion about looking at this link and posting the three logs.
