Title: Removing stubborn winXP wallpaper image
Post by: harpo on September 10, 2008, 08:23:45 AM
I'm working with a teenager's laptop which has a wallpaper installed that I can't seem to uninstall.  It has been downloaded from the internet.
I tried going through the desktop properties and am not able to select any of the default Windows backgrounds.
Any ideas how I might deal with this issue.
Thanks!

I would suspect malware. Why don't you read this and post the requested logs in the Computer Virus and Spyware section of the forum.

Go to start > Control panel > Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop... >  Web tab
Make sure Lock desktop items is unchecked.
Select everything you find in there (except for "My current home page") and press the delete button on the right.
Hit OK below > apply in previous window.

Apparently, a friend of mine has allowed teens free internet access to his Dell Inpiron 1100 laptop.  I have upraded the RAM to 1GB and have done basic system maintenance and cleanup.  A desktop wallpaper has been installed to the computer that seems to be rather well entrenched.  When I go to the display properties window and choose the Desktop tab, the system does not allow any of the WindowsXP-installed backgrounds to be selected.  In addition, it is impossible to even us the scroll bar to see all of the possible backgrounds.  It seems this desktop item has a lock on the computer.

I have run a number of utilities and performed some general cleanup:
Updated to WindowsXP SP3
Installed AVG 8.0 and performed a complete HD scan
Ran Super Anti-Spyware
Ran Ad-Aware 2008
Ran Spybot Search & Destroy
Defraged the HD
Loaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and scanned HD

Tried to locate the image that is loaded to the desktop.  Searched the following directories:
C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper
C:\Windows

Could not find it in either of these directories.  Apparently, this background does not want to give up!  Hopefully, I have shed a little more light on this situation,
Thanks

I thought I would find something but that log looks fine.

Is this the Administrator account or an account with admin privileges?

I believe the computer boots straight into the user's account (which may be the same as having admin privileges).  If I tell the system to Log off, it only shows me one account option (the name of the teenager).
I'm not sure if that helps.

I'm guessing this is an account with admin privileges and not the main administrator account.

How about creating a new account and then deleting the one that is being used now? It sounds like they have damaged it somehow and creating a new account would be easier then trying to troubleshoot the problem(s).

Unless anybody else has a better idea.

How to create and configure user accounts in Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279783)

Great fix!
Backed up user files to a thumb drive and deleted the original account (which was an administrative account).
Created a new account for the teen which gave me the original Dell desktop.  Now, I have access to all of the desktop backgrounds and the user should be happy.
Thanks, again for the help!
