Title: Stupid Chrome bug: Why I'm switching back to Firefox
Post by: kpac on September 12, 2008, 07:28:05 AM
It doesn't take much to make me hate a browser. After using Chrome for an entire week, I found one seemingly innocuous bug that is so annoying and frustrating that I can't even use the product anymore...

I remember when Google Desktop Search was first released and it made my PC unusable - I had to reinstall Windows XP

Hmmmm.....All of a sudden I don't like Google Software anymore.... (not that I have Google Desktop)

Yea, I know. Re-install Windows? Not worth risking. ;D

To steal a phrase from Obama, the Chrome bells and whistles are the crudely hastily and badly applied lipstick, and the (very ugly) pig is the outdated version of Safari that Google's browser is based on.

if only google chrome and apple's safari switched faces (at least on windows), then maybe it would work  :)

I am a fan of Google, but felt no urge, and still do not feel any urge, to try their browser just because it's there...

Does anybody understand what the word Beta means? The good thing about beta releases is the feedback, both good and bad, is listened to and in many instances acted upon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle#Beta

Maybe all of the feedback should go to the Google team to help improve it for the final release. Google Chrome Help Center (http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/request.py?contact_type=feedback)

All right -- I hadn't been following that closely -- with all the hype, I thought it was a regular release that they'd already beta tested.

What do you want from Chrome? It works well. Your bank accounts are very safe with me :)

Maybe so, but they'd be safer still with me... :D

The more I read the more all of this becomes more clear. Google isn't just trying to give us a new browser, they are actually trying to create a new "Web OS." They are actually going after MS. It also explains all of the cacheing the browser does. Although I don't like the cacheing, your information is only going to be at risk "if" someone hacks into the Google servers, just like it would be if they hacked into your bank, paypal or even your own computer. Hopefully and very likely everything is encrypted so there would still be a huge degree of difficulty in anyone actually stealing your information.

"Google knows that the way to beat Microsoft is to become the operating system for the Internet. You do that by [rendering] the actual OS obsolete."

Google's Chrome aims to kill Windows, make Web the OS of choice (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9114004)

I've also read some of the security blogs and they don't have any concern about the cacheing.

Google is also taking big steps to make sure everyones information stays safe.

Google hires browser hacking guru (http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=410&tag=rbxccnbzd1)

Zalewski, who has been credited in the past with finding several major vulnerabilities (buffer overflow in SendMail, weaknesses in TCP/IP ISNs, code execution hole in IE’s JPG rendering) has spent most of 2007 releasing details of severe holes in Internet Explorer and Firefox — constantly cracking the browsers’ security models.

It makes a bit more sense now, thanks.

I didn't know Chrome did "that" much caching....

It appears Yahoo didn't do such a good job with Sarah Palin's e-mail info...
Whose to say google can do it better ? ?
Anything under the Sun can and will be hacked...eventually.

They can't do it better I would imagine. I've said before, there are flaws in everything. If someone bright enough sets sight on it then it will eventually happen. Same goes for your bank or even Computer Hope. Microsoft has even been the victim many times.

With Yahoo I wouldn't be surprised that information was sold instead of hacked...

How can I trust Google with my private info, since:
1. Chrome definitely started from the wrong foot, considering its privacy/security issues (yes, I know it's beta)
2. It tries to drive-by-install its *censored* bar in every other application, I try to install. We all know, that when you have IE, or FF problem, Google toolbar is very first suspect (along with Yahoo toolbar).

I've noticed that, ever since I installed Chrome, a process called GoogleUpdate.exe is always in task manager....  >:(

Odd.

I just did a fresh install of Chrome about 2 hours ago and it didn't add it to my task manager. And if I launch Chrome it only adds chrome.exe to task manager.

Strange. I don't have a Google Update folder in my Start Menu nor do I have a system tray Icon.
I think I'll reinstall Chrome.

Do you have the Google toolbar by chance?

You could post a HJT log in the malware section :)

Nope, no google toolbar.

After I try reinstalling Chrome and it is still there, I'll post a HJT. ;D
